sounds like a pain
i like my method more
you take a cylinder shape it the way you want the cutou t to look like delete the ends, flip teh object insider out. place it where you want it to be at. delete faces of the model off around it. attach it and then attach it to the frame by making new faces.

jw whats the difference between spline and edit mesh besides the tools in them? every body tells me they get better results with spline

spline just really allows you to create your models with as much presicion as you decide, especially with weapons you can get all the little curves and bits you want instead of havening restrictions with editable mesh, or screwed texture co-ord as with boolean. its really in just experimentng with different styles of modelling and finding which is best for you.
