blah blah blah, it's halo custom edition, not halo rip everyone elses work and make nothing custom edition
as far as greed? ha I think not, logical thinking? yes
anyone who says "they are just being greedy" just wants the program to Steal work, ur not fooling anyone here
I've talked to steelix and he gave me the ok to release CLASSIC wraith tags.
hold ur horses!

Anyways, this would start a whole bunch of bad things. It would encouragw people not to make new material, considering they could just rip it from others. It would stop all creattivity in halo CE.

Is that what we want?!??!
No map is safe from being ripped. There is no way to protect a map from being decompiled due to the way it is structured. Unless halo's source was changed to read maps differently, then maps will always be the same format and only ever work in that format. Changing data to stop a decompiler would result in halo not being able to read the maps.
(My sig was too big. It should have been 400 X 200 with 3 lines or less of text)

No it wasn't... It was 370 x 117 and one line of text... *Remakes sig*

True. No map is "safe." But, most people don't go throught the time figuring out how to decompile a map, so the maps are safe for now.

Well... lets just say HMT came this --> <-- close to being able to get working tags out of maps (just the meta wasnt readable by HEK)

Wow! This topic spawned A LOT of talk!

First off, I want to appologize on my lack of effort in the whole Halo Modding community. It is mostly due to my "Linuxification" in which I have slowly been switching from Windows to Linux. Unfortunately, I cannot run Halo from linux, so this poses a problem.

Anyway, about the conversion... I have done quite a bit of reasearch in the past and I still have everything I found, so if you guys are interested, we can start where I left off.

Also, while I admit that I am a major n00b as far as HEK and HaloCE goes and that the main reason for a tag converter would be to "steal" other people's creations, I think it would still be a wonderful thing for people that are learning how to make their own models or who do not have 3dsMax. Just because somebody else is learning the ropes doesn't mean YOU have to lose any creativity, and it is doubtful that any spinoffs will make it into the mainstream.

ive always had a view on this subject. esp. after i tried to get some tags from some1 who had a converter. what i asked for was some biped and ai tags extracted from halopc. i really see no reason at all to keep these tags away from the public, considering we already mod halopc. its not like its stealing anything, since we could make the tags manually. it would just take forever.

but about people stealing stuff from other haloCE maps. first off, stealing i guess would be taking w/o permission and saying its urs. thats just sad if anyone does that. but unfortunately, to make sure that the small amount of people who would do that cant, i guess we wont be seeing a decompiler anytime soon. but if lets say there was not factor, then it would be fine to take things from other maps. i think that since there is no money involved in making these maps, what is given out to the public as a map should also be able to be used as a resource for others. i personally released a pack of models and levels and such a while ago to this community in hopes to start getting people to give more to the community than just a "hey look what i can do".

i think that what these few people with the converters should do is release all of the vehicle, biped, ai, weapon, scenery, etc... tags to the public. i know that they gave out those 3 vehicle tags, which was very cool. and if those with the converter want some credit, then people should just mention that they put converted tags into their map.

unfortunately, it seems like this community is not too keen on helping others learn about making good maps. most people are just into making the best map ever, making people beg for it, then acting high and mighty after people see that its not half bad. i see too many people being rude about something like a game. on a more personal note, i am planning on using modeling later in life and at a class at stanford this summer. i would like to get more stuff out of haloPC in order to learn from it, but im hindered by those who decide not to help out.

I do not see why anyone would care if someone stole their tags. That just means that the public likes it so much, that they want to see it in more maps.

Sorry about the double post.

The first time I submitted it, it said you may not post again in such a short time. I figured it didnt go through, so I submitted it again.
