Edge Errors :(
Yes, im back from my Holiday Sabatical...lucky you...
I am SOOOO close to completion, but i cant get a single .jms file without edge errors. when import the .wrl tool creates, i dont understand what its telling me. do i delete the lines that it adds to the model, or do i leave them in and re-export?
IM using G-max, and illegal dowloads of 3dsmax are for losers. But maybe becoming a loser is what it takes.
Has anyone actually completed a halo map with gmax? Is there a tutorial out there for wrl fixing?
*confusion*

I suppose so, but i havent gotten any further than the edge errors, and using the HL2 editing software has dummied up my gmax navigation skills. Ill just send you some screenshots of a basic map when near .jms export time, and one with the edge error .wrl file applied to it. I havent made any "progress" really, but the process makes sense to me, and once i get past this edge error part, i think i'll be able to finish up, and then repeat the process enough times to make a pretty good map.
maybe.
Mmkay, ill get you some screenshots...
If you have AIM, im always on, and that works a little bit better.

Yeah, but my problem is that when i do that, theres nothing recognizable to me where those lines were. I don't know what im looking for, and even if i did, i dont know how to fix it.
oh, yeah, every time i export and compile into a scenario, i get the same edge errors with the .wrl. its like a V shaped thing, and 2 or 3 boxes in one corner. I guess im making the same mistake every time?
ill post some pics.

Go for the ones named
-wrl
-cmd copy
-woodlandwar copy

ok well since its just giving you open edge errors why don't you goto the edge selection tab (right beside the vertex selection tab) and then there should be a button that says select open edges. if you veiw your model in wire frame its real easy to see where the open edges are and then you will need to either create more faces or redo some.

Alright, im back, and ive decided im going to successfully make a map if its the last thing i do. NOW, bearing in mind that i have no idea what an edge error is, what it looks like, how to fix it, or what im looking for, can someone explain to me What i do right after i put the wrl file onto my .gmax file?
Im left with a confusing wireframe setup and some purple lines, generally its two rectanglular boxes and two diagonal lines or something of that nature, but those lines mean nothing to me. I can't grasp what im supposed to do. I know they are just pointing out the errors, but i dont know what my map SHOULD look like, and even if i did, i wouldnt know how to fix it.

well, once you imported the .wrl file, type h on the keyboard. Chimp puts the edge errors in as actual objects on ur map. Once you fix the edge error (open edge) you can delete the Chimp Edge Error object it put in the object section.
A map has to be "sealed" meaning no holes in the map. So, a edge error is basically just a hole in the map.
I'd be happy to help you on AIM if you need any additional help, or PM me

Anyhow,..wait, are you using Gmax? I really dont know anything about Gmax, but i'm sure I can help you out with fixing errors. I've cut back on modeling since i started using photoshop. I asked waverunner for help, but he said I didn't need any

I still want to see how far you've come, and catch up. Youve been gone for like three months

Nice to see you back, Squirrel boy

An edge error does not mean there is a hole. An open edge error means there is a hole. It could be there is an edge there that does not connect to anything else. Or even worse thatn that.. Degenerate Triangle errors. All you have to do , although it will take some time. Is to just keep importing the *.wrl file, pick one object from it. Then go through and delete the faces that are close to that. Click to edge and you will prolly see an edge in place of the deleted geometry. Get rid of it, then recreate the faces. You might have to repeat the process of running tool and re-importing the *.wrl quite a few times to get it fixed.Waverunner wrote:A map has to be "sealed" meaning no holes in the map. Also use the STL modifier and change the material color on error. Might be a lil easier than doing all the exporting/importing stuff.
Hope that helps..

Hurr..
Alright, im going into gmax as i type this..
*hours pass*
Ok, i did the "h" command, picked one of the errors, and it simply highlited the corresponding lines. I dont know what to DO with it. I see the errors just fine, i know they are errors, but i dont know HOW to fix them. it just makes no sense to me.

More or less, despite your kind attempts to help me, im still stuck in a hole.

Those look like bounding boxes arround ur bad face/edge. Try to edit the main mesh and just delete the same thing that the *.wrl file represents on your mesh. You just have to try to fix it, then export, reimport.. There is sometimes no easier way of doing it than that. It can be a very long, and drawn out process, but you will feel damn good when ur done and the errors are fixed. Just keep goin at it..

alot of times all you have to do to fix an error is weld some verticies. there might be a usesless vertex on the same edge as another, causing an error like this: ._________._________. take the middle one and weld to one of the edges. also there might be two verticies in the same spot. to check this drag a selection box around the suspected vertex and if it says 2 or more verticies selected, weld them
