Well I made a gascan out of boredom,I intended to add alittle sinking X mark into the middle of it..problem is that when I do that it deletes the vertices or something and leaves an invisible spot..anyone know what I can do to fix this?
Here is the picture of the gascan, the black X is what was supposed to be booleaned and "sunk in"

And yes I am going to fix that slight messup at the top.
problem
Couldnt get it to work, not enough layers of vertices I suppose,oh well doesnt matter....heres an update on the supplies I modelled.

i have your solution!!!!
1st: make a totally black image in photoshop that looks like it would be used to be the bitmap for your gascan. make a white "x" with the airbrush tool, so the edges of it will look like it is a small x when regarding only totally white, but a larger one because the color tapers off to black as it goes out
2nd: save this image in as large of a filesize possible (it makes sure there is no un-necessarry blurring)
3rd: create a plane/box that has a side that would fit snug to the side of the gascan
4th: give that plane/box a displacement modifier and select the image you just created. assign that image as the displacement map and adjust the intensity setting
5th: after you get it just right, line it up with the gascan and do a subtraction boolean
6th: enjoy your gascan! you can do that to both sides, or invert the colors of the map and try applying it directly to the gascan, or leave the images colors alone and see if you can set the intensity to a negative integer.
glad to help ^_^

ASPARTAME: in your diet soda and artificial sweeteners. also, it's obviously completely safe. it's not like it will cause tumors or anything. >.>

Thats the long way of doing it... Make a box with 3 height segments, allign the 2 central segments of vertecies, extrude the edge, mesh smooth, play where you want it to cut out, select from the Standard stack under Create>Objects "Compound objects" Select boolean, click pick operand B, click on the "Cross" mesh, and it will cut out, if it leaves you with a fat hole then:
Click create polygon under editable mesh, create all of the polygons going anti clockwise from the bottom left of it, then bevel three times, getting closer and smaller than the previous boolean each time.
Or you can make a few cuts, and bevel a bit.. meh

Made a few more things, shotgun shells and a bullet of some pistol that and a magazine for the berreta I think..well its still not done yet but I can't get any good pictures, for the hell of it I made a box to store the shogun shells.
