linda was the spartan...she survived the unyieldind hierophant. (jus go to the hbo story page)
Linda was killed in the first book and put into cryostasis with the hope of repairing her injuries and reviving her(which they do in the 3rd book).
And yes, I think MC cares the most about Linda. The first time MC showed any type of emotional outburst was when Linda was "killed". He didn't really do anything when Grace died. The only other Spartan He was upset about dying was Sam. But I don't think that would have gone anywhere
