Ok, try this.

When you wanna get closer in you should highlight your perspective window (assuming your using that) and press the "T" key, you should now be in top view, now just press the "P" key again and you should be back in perspective view in your default starting angle.

Hope it helps

the zoom kinda locks on ya doesn't it? it happens to me to. i just push the zoom extends icon, and then pick the zoom icon again and soom in and out. that works well for me. hope this gave you another option as well!

both icons are on the bottom right of the 3ds max task pane. in max6, i beleive the zoom extend icon is the little box split into quarters... when pressed, it moves the perspetive back to a default view where you can see all the objects in the window (but still on the same degree vector you were originally on before pressing it.) the zoom icon looks like a little magnifying glass. i usually use the mousewheel to zoom in and out because it's more convienient, but it's a little bit more imprecise and choppy. i use the zoom tool for delicate zooms and getting into small places. hope that helped!
