heres what you do my friend:
1. click on the model you want.
2. export that model using HMT
3. go to milkshape, go File-Import-Wavefront OBJ
4. open up the model. do your thing.
5. then go File-Export-Wavefront OBJ and save over the original.
6. got to HMT, click on the model you want changed. click import and import that modified model.
7. save and have fun :D

where do u see under "file" export? all I have in that is open, close, and exit. I'm using HMT V3. I can't get 1.7.1 to work on my computer because I get a error message. only older versions work. the one I have is 1.6.4.

if you exporting the object from hmt.
you click the weapon fold out.
click the weapon, and click EXPORT which is below the 3d viewer.

if your exporting the object (model) in milkshape then go
file-export-wavefront OBJ.
kapish  ?

Im afraid so mate but you can look at the groups of the weapon involved and see what you can pull out of the model to create what your after i personally pull the origonal model into as many seperate pieces as possible then usse the pieces to make new weapons.
Plus i also have a much quicker way of creating all the views (1ST and 3RD person view) by only remodeling one weapon.
Just open your map in HHT and go to the weapon tag select the weapon you want then on the right you should see all its dependancys ok the first one is mode select it and in the drop down menu at the bottom find the weapons fp view and change it to that and thats it so now the game uses only the high detail 1st person model to generate all of the views.
Thanks for your time.

You need to be looking under the model tags, not the weapon tags.
