I'm buying a new gaming machine, I'm trying to keep it under 1500

i would like to know if it is really necessary to pay extra for ultimate.

is it necessary to have ultimate?
what is so special about it?

will not using it affect how well high graphics demanding games perform?

what features will i be missing out on if i don't get ultimate?

this seems to be the only thing keeping me above or below 1500

but if ultimate is worth it i think i can do a little extra for the money.

please nothing about how i should go with something ells, cause that isn't constructive to me.

Download the windows 7 beta, it's good till august and it runs 100x better than vista ultimate.(did i mention the beta is free?) After that think about buying it, i know I will be. Fantastic OS. It's been almost a month and I have yet to encounter a flaw with this os.

Ultimate really isn't worth getting over Home Premium, their exactly the same except for more business features and some extra security to hassle with.

Also, I use Ultimate, running the desktop at 1680x1050 with Areo on, I have 2.22GB usage, and that's just sitting on the desktop, I would invest in 4 gigs at least.

I do suggest having a stable OS as a dual boot. I've witnessed many computers saved by having a dual boot of XP available. (Yeah, XP. Stable.)

Indeed got my XP as a backup.

Unused RAM is wasted RAM. Why do people care about that? The OS adapts with how much you have. Superfetch.

Don't bother with ultimate. Unless you have business needs or feel like you require the video desktop feature (which can be added in any version of vista), then I'd say save your money and get Home Premium

Just buy Ultimate. Seeing as Windows 7 is close to release I would personally wait. But If you need it now, just get Ultimate. You don't need any backup OS. You'll be fine. My brother's new rig I built for him has been running for a solid 5 months with no hiccups/problems. It only cost $600 too, so it's not a supercomputer. It runs Fallout 3, Left 4 Dead, and everything else he has smoothly. SP1 fixed a lot of problems people had, Vista is stable now, too many people are just afraid of it.

Your encouraging him to buy something he may not need when he said he was budgeting: kudos.

Look on ebay, I got my copy of Vistal Ultimate for 150$.

is the core i7 good compared to that?

You're going to need to buy a 64-Bit version of Windows to use 8gigs of ram.

The i7 eats an extreme, then shits it out.

Just get Home Premium. You don't need Ultimate "because you can."

Also, what ever happened to using my Computers thread that I made for this purpose...?

i don't like it that's why, this is focused on my needs rather than lots of peoples.

You don't NEED ddr3, but the i7 is the first CPU which can fully take advantage of its speed. I have an i7 940 with 6 GB of 1333mhz ddr3, and it runs silky smooth. Also, I have a 750w PSU, which has already shut down a couple of times under load with one GTX 950, so I bought a 1000W replacement. Are you going to run dual/tri/quad SLI? In any case, 450 is surely not enough.

You're going to Quad SLI with 9800GX2's? A little overkill I would think, probably cheaper to get a single GTX 295.
And yes, if you want to use the i7 you need triple-channel RAM, so three sticks of DDR3.

It two cards but has two physical processors per card, one card is essentially a 2 processor SLI setup.
