my friend was telling me about charging a few kids around the school for jailbreaking their ipod touch/iphone and i was wondering what kind of legal issues it would bring up, a reasonable price, and if anyone on hm would host a site for me to do business on

This is more of a social thing. No need to make a site for it.

I think having a site would cause more issues than it would get you business. It's very easy to show intent when you have a site advertising your profiting from circumvention of copy protections, which is technically illegal, although not really enforced as far as I've ever seen. Someone hosting a site for you could very easily be served a Cease and Desist order from Apple or another entity, which would cause them to lose their hosting as well. I'd say just spread it by word-of-mouth, I can't imagine there's enough people at your school that it would have trouble getting arround.

Hmm, I'm not familiar enough with the situation to make a judgment about that, I'll leave the global idea to others.

Just to criticise the idea, someone has to be an idiot to pay someone to jailbreak their ipod/phone... A simple search on youtube shows that even prepubescent boys can do it.

Now that jailbreaking can lead to the breaking of Apple's AppStore DRM, it is more than likely that you can be brought down for jailbreaking (in the same sense that people get in trouble for modding xboxs and the like because you can possibly use copied media). Same goes for unlocking the iPhones from AT&T (since almost everywhere else in the world offers them unlocked anyway, you chumps :P)

not a very good idea to do this....
especially if your thinking world wide....

and apple would probably prohibit that kind of thing anyways

Well, When it was the thing to do (1st Gen Nanos, 5th Gen iPVs,) I used to charge the illiterate and the Technologically lame around 20 bucks to Reformat, Clean, and At times put iPod Linux on them. Just like the Lotto does, I tax the stupid. The bigger the mess they made, the higher the price.

Unless something dramatically changed from when I jailbroke my iPod touch, you can't seriously expect people to pay for this 'service' just as Scotty said.

Jailbreaking my iPod involved me simply typing a URL into Safari... that was it.

You wanna charge people to do that? :?

2.0 jailbreaking is different. The first kind required you to get the firmware, add combine it with a hacked file thingo, make it into a new firmware, crack itunes and then "restore" the firmware.
But that was easy anyway, just took time. I'm sure there's better methods now.

I did this for a while, I made alot of money, I charged 50 dollars for unlocking iphones I did about 4 of these, then I unlock ipods for free for friends... Then I sold iphones imported from the US to down here for 600usd each I sold about 3 of these... back on track its a good business that could go wrong so easily... If any user fucks up their phone (or ipod) they can come back to you and ask for a refund and if you dont know how to fix it you end up with a big trouble...

Its an easy well paying job but advance with caution shit could come your way...

Knowledge is power, especially when others don't know how. It is not their fault if they cannot figure out they are paying more than they should for someone to jailbreak their iPod/iPhone for them.

You live in Ireland why would you care to inform apple, its legal its a service, also I don't believe in charging for jailbreaking ipod touches thats just silly... iphones was another deal because I helped most of my customers and I even had one come back to me for like 3 unlocks since I helped him with alot of tech problems and when he upgraded his phone lol

I suggest you mess with your ipod as much as you can before you do this

Why not just get a free web server? There are a few out there that are good enough for what you're going to be doing.

I was thinking of starting an iPod touch modding forum/site soon. Even buying a domain and stuff, just because there are sites out there that have the good content, but they're so unorganised and not run well so I decided I'd try to make one.

If I do, you can have in.
