I use Windows' remote desktopping when I need to connect to my own computer. However, I have frequently used this to remote to other users' computers to assist them with various things.

Yeah I like logmein, but the update where if the host moves the mouse or types, the guest or "controller" cannot control until 2 or 3 seconds later.

I've heard VNC is better from some people, I've heard the same for logmein(more for VNC).

I like LogMeIn more.

I just set up FTP and then connect in and transfer individual files...I have no need to actually physically SEE what my Desktop is.

The purpose of this isn't file transfer, it's for remote desktop capabilities. The element of transferring files is an entirely different one.

I use XDMCP (the standard for remote desktoping with X), which of course requires a very specialized client. I haven't actually needed to login to any of my computers from school, but if I did, I'd probably use VNC as it's the next best available option. Above all, I wouldn't want to have any of my computers accessible from outside my network, even if I could be sure it was just by me.

Well I figured, since D4rkFire said

you don't really have another need for your computer from school...at least I don't.

And to prove my nonlinear thought train, I will now give points from the opposing side that just popped up in my mind as I was writing that. I could see the use if you're, say, using Photoshop on your home computer for a project at school, or some other program that you don't have on the physical computer next to you.

My schools computers have a filter on them that doesn't allow you to acess many websites. So I was thinking of using it for more along the lines of accessing photobucket and whatnot.

What would you need on your desktop besides files? You're using a computer right there...

I doubt the school would support you installing any of these programs anyway. Also, visiting a personal website will not get you in trouble as long as you are careful to not violate any policies with its contents.

You only have to install on your home computer. Then you can access it from any web browser.

My school wouldn't allow this. Plus I just usually bring my Portable 250gb to school. That has everything, including music, games, ect.

I've encountered several situations where I need to use an application not available to me on the school's computer.

Then why not just put it on the computer? You can be monitored using that software easily.

Any certified IT would be able to discover what your doing easily. You're less likely to get caught if you use a private/personal server then some major website they probably already know about.

To be honest, a lot of schools use these same techniques to monitor their students in the classroom.

1. in are computer classes the instructor can monitor any of us at any time without us knowing it.

2. this program can have Trojans that you don't know about, also its worth the money and security to get a zone alarm router that allows you to access your desktop anywhere with internet.
