My Brother is in the Hospital

My brother is almost 19 years old. He broke up with his girlfriend of three years about a month and a half ago. Since then he's had a hard time getting over it. Tonight he overdosed on a painkiller, Tramadol, and suffered from a seizure as a result. He said his back was hurting that day and that he only took the medicine to relieve his back, not to hurt himself. We're going to set him up with a psychiatrist and a private nurse at home to make sure he's okay. Please just let it be known that my brother was admitted to the hospital early on Saturday morning. Please keep him in your prayers as he and my family struggle through difficult times.

Today I woke up at almost noon. My parents had already gone to the hospital since I had slept so late. I called them and talked for a bit. They told me to go into his room and take out anything he could hurt himself with; razors, screws, pliers, knives, drill bits, etc. I'm really worried about him. He's fine; he's not hooked up on anything right now, not even an IV. He'll be home today, but I'm not sure what to believe. I'm not entirely convinced that he didn't mean to hurt himself. It's not fun when you need to hide things to keep a family member from hurting himself.

I hope he gets better. There is not one thing I would hate more than if my brother got hurt.

best of luck with him overcoming this, it's not fun to go through bad times like that, and what he really needs is your support right now. just keep optomistic and things will get better.

He's not coming home tonight because the psychiatrist is not able to make it in until tomorrow. However, he could have been home this morning. All his vitals are normal, and he's not hooked up with anything as I said before. He was at a friend's house with all his friends when it happened last night, and they all came to the hospital for several hours to make sure he was okay. I think he realized that he has some great friends that truly care about him. My brother's old sense of humor sure isn't gone, and he seems to be fine.

Only time will tell.

Thanks for your continued support.

i'm pretty sure he meant to inflict harm on himself with that medication. i recently was perscribed tramadol and soma for a side impact car colission related whiplash injury. narcotics yes, but you also have to take a pretty high dosage of tram to land in the hospital. 50mg will get you relaxed and 100mg will get you off-balance, so i can imagine that you'd need a much higher dosage to go to the hospital.

i know it's not the nicest thing to hear, but i just want you to get over any misconception or confusion about the drug's strength.

hope you get the best going for him, though. i personally know it's tough to go through a family member's psych treatments or sessions. you guys have to stay strong for him, because right now he has no strenght of his own to rely on, hence the avenue taken recently.

good luck to your family and especially your brother for recovery.

It says take 1-2 pills every 4-6 hours. He took 18 pills within about a two hour span. First 8 pills, then 10 more two hours later.

I have no clue what's going on inside his head. He's obviously depressed on the inside, but whenever I see him in the hospital he's in great spirits. Hopefully the psychiatrist can tell us something.

it seems he's turning around. just show him that there's more to life than his gf, and that he should get over it.

Really sorry to hear this, Ravn. Best of luck to your brother, you and your family. I recently had a good friend attempt suicide on an over-the-counter drug overdose, so I know what you are going through; except I can't imagine what this must be like for a sibling... :|
