american youth- non american opinions wanted too

In america it is commonly believed that minors cannot make decisions for themselves, and that by age 18 they can... what i wanna know is why is 18 the number. I know 20 year olds that ask like 5th graders, and i know a 5th grader that has a maturity level much higher than most adults. Why is it that you can fight and die in a war at 18 but u can't have a drink untill you are 21. I just don't understand or see the point in that number.
anyone care to give their opinion on the matter?

Most. Most is the big word here. Yeah sure, 1 out of 10 people, at age 15, acts more mature than adults. 1 out of 10 adults acts like he's 15. But most aren't. The majority don't act like that. That's the big thing. 18 is the age most people start realizing they should get a grip and start living...

Take it as an approximation man. Every one 'grows up' at different ages for different reasons, just like everyone is different.
The thing I don't get about the U.S.A. is not making the change from Imperial to Metric. I mean base 10 makes so much sense. Then you have imperial which has Mile's, Inches, Feet and other things that are stupid. I find that extremely illogical.

i agree abotu the metric
Na wats pissin me off isn't adults holding us back, its youth that agree with it, my friend won't drive me in his car because its illegal, but its not out of fear of being caught its because thats the law. my ex gf didn't wanna have sex untill she was 18 because the thought that would automaticaly make her feel ready, my friend won't have a drink because the law is 21. all the people i mentioned could do any of these things responsibly, but they don't because "thats the law" wich i think is a bunch of shit, the law used to be blacks sit at the back of the buss, and women couldn't vote. its fact that there are crap laws.... u know wat i'm just in a pissed off mood and i'm done rambling for now, i'll look at this tomarrow

The imperial system isn't better than metric, as I know many of you will agree, but I also realise the more arrogant amongst you will disagree.
It is more logical, and thats a fact. I know from experience because I live in a country that has made the change, although not in my lifetime.
As my good friend chad so elegantly put it; by keeping the imperial system, you are keeping alive an old english "way"... maybe that'll make you think twice about it

You have to remember, 80% of statistics are made up on the spot.
Our 'adult' age is quite varied, although by definition it is probably 18, you could be a parent, married and living alone before you are 18, yet you're still a minor? Doesn't make too much sense. Not that I'm really bothered, the only advantage of being 18 is that you can buy alcohol and see an 18 rated movie. Big whoop.

old = obsolete.
today we "adjust"...
i shouldnt discuss with english about that, coz they're like the only ones in the world, that need the steer in the car on the right side of the car, because they drive on the left lane...
making metric even more general, it'd be much more convenient to the world.. image a world that speaks one language and this world would use all thesame "values".. it's much more easy on all of us..

And driving on a different side of the road doesn't hurt anyone, bar the morons that come here and forget =p
And if I'm not mistaken, the Australian drive on the left?

'Cuz they want you to stay clean and sober for the war
As for the metric system, I know why we didn't change when we should have. The simple reason is that many Americans hate France, which is where the system was originally created. The other is that people were afraid it would cause chaos and confusion. Come on. It's Base-10. It couldn't be easier!. It's just sad that we didn't switch.
