I have been comparing our government with that in George Orwell's Nineteen Eighty-Four. I also saw V For Vendetta this weekend. We are soon approaching such a point of a total nanny state. Not exactly there yet but here are some comparisons:

Telescreens -> Govt Surveillance/AT&T/etc

Fierce Nationalism -> Fierce Patriotism

Newspeak -> Have you heard how most kids are talking?

Not all of it. If you have more examples add em'
But. I think that thoughtcrime and others are on their way.

Ideas?

I think we've been moving to an increasingly dangerously conservative state in US politics, but I think it's just about reached that end and is turning around.

I'm sure I'm just weird, but I value my rights as an individual more than I do my physical safety. I think the government has taken the compromise of rights for the sake of public safety a little too far. Granted, I don't like the Patriot Act, but I don't think it's as unreasonable as people make it seem. By that I mean that it is unreasonable just not an urgent ZOMG GOVERNMENT NOES problem.

I think that the issue of safety/rights is the pressing issue involved with the government acts etc., not so much keeping the upper class at the top and the lower class at the bottom by controlling the middle class oppressively.

As far as newspeak goes, I think while the kids today may be talking in extreme slang, and making up contractions, however that is not the point of newspeak. The point of newspeak was to eliminate certain ideas (i.e. freedom, individuality) from modern language, so while people may be able to fathom the ideas, they would have no way of communicating them, and I do not believe that is the direction that language is going.

I figured that would be the one thing we could agree on.

And sorta related, I just finished doing a 1984 play in school (tech).

Even though 99.99% of my thoughts are conservative, the different thought is that all freedoms should be upheld.
