My Mom...........

My mom is going through some very serious surgery tomorrow. She's having a tumor removed from inside her head, right near a bunch of balance and hearing nerves. The tumor is only 5mm in diameter, but if it is not taken out, it will continue to grow slowly, and it will press down on her nerves and brain stem, eventually. This tumor has been effecting her hearing for about 10 years, until she finally just decided to go to a doctor and talk about it. The tumor was discovered about 7 or 8 months ago, and the surgery was put off until August 2 (tomorrow) so her 3-6 week recuperation would not interfere my Bar Mitzvah, or its preparation, which was up until June. My grandparents have come up from Florida, to stay with myself and my older brother, until my mom has gotten better. Luckily, my uncle is a heart surgeon, and he is coming to North Carolina later today, so he can be here. He would be just about the only person who has some idea about what the surgeons actually mean when they say, "Anastesia, set, 147-TKI4."

In an incredibly fortunate coincidence, 2 surgeons who are world famous for this exact kind of surgery work here, in Raleigh. They will both be operating on her. Both of these men have been doing this for over 20 years, many of those years have been spent working together. Another plus sign is that a guy at my school just had this surgery about 4 months ago, but his was a lot more serious. My mom's tumor is 5mm in diameter, his was 5cm in diameter, 1000% bigger. My mom has accidentally bumped into his family a number of times, as a matter of fact, over the past 5 or 6 months. A really lucky thing that happened for my mom: Just a few days ago, she happened to see the guy that had the surgery. He looked great, and his hair was already covering his scar (so no doubt it would cover my mom's). This made my mom feel a lot better, because she knows that she will be all right. Although the chances that she will lose the hearing in the ear that the tumor is on the side of are 50%, there are much more serious effects that could possibly happen if nothing is done about it.

I will be visiting my mom a lot within the next week or so when she is still in the hospital, so I'm sorry if this will cut down on my time spent with the Halomods Community.

I thank you for reading this. It really means a lot to me. I will be updating you on how she is doing. Please stop and take a moment over the next week to say a prayer for her.

I will probably print out this thread and bring it to her, so please try to not flame, or swear, or anything like that, okay? I really appreciate your time. Thanks, everybody.

I visited my mom in the hospital today. The doctors reported that 100% of the tumor has been removed. My mom was really tired and her head was hurting a little, but she is going to be perfectly fine. She will be back home by the weekend. Many thanks to everyone that wished her the best!

She emerged from surgery with the same amount of hearing in that ear. There was no loss of her hearing. :D
