Seriously, do you guys have to post this foul crap in a guys thread like this? He has cancer for gods sake, show some sympathy. Hate smoking all you want, but this is NOT the place to argue it. Show your maturity here.
Willingly inducing sickness upon oneself is different than if you were an innocent in a scenario. People discussing it aren't really discussing smoking itself, but rather why one would knowingly contributed to their own demise without showing any willingness or motivation to stop.
So, what you're saying is that 1/6th of the world's population is out there smoking, when they have no reason to be smoking, they just decided one day that they'd inhale potentially dangerous chemicals with no positive effects. You say it like there is nothing actually good about them.

I never said it was an excuse, but do me this, go get addicted to something and just stop. It's easier said than done.

It should be easy to quit especially when you have the risks of dieing!!!!

The doctors say I could potentially die and I Caused this my self...Isn't that a reason to quit???

I don't give a shit if its addicting if your not smart enough or don't have enough fucking will power to stop then you deserve to kick the bucket, no offense.

@Cox
That kind of logic works in some areas such as eating...As well, most food doesn't have literal addictive properties (except things with caffeine, i.e. chocolate).

The smoking epidemic is a bit worse...Nicotine is an addictive drug and it comes with its own set of withdrawal symptoms which are then nullified when you have that oh so relieving cigarette. To say "oh but your life's in danger so just stop" would probably be extremely hard for the person to just go cold turkey (what a stupid stupid stupid term). The person will still feel side effects, even though they know they're doing it for the greater good, they have become reliant on the stuff...The brain would rely on the cigarette's properties to control certain actions that a non addicted person can handle without the external help.

Like social smokers, they did it for fun and then later it comes to stress relief (still being social)...So having that cigarette with friends gets that sense of relief from everything else and the cigarette can make it happen. My friend once described it as like getting tipsy...Just having it at the party away from troubles is more relieving than anything.

So to say that they should outright stop because its obviously killing them doesn't fully work in this scenario. the logic behind it works, but actually playing it out doesn't due to what I said above...I'm sorry for sergeant's situation because attempting to go from a pack a day smoker to a non-smoker especially doing it for so many years would be extremely hard and his impulses in the situation would be to "just have one more". My advice (coming from an ignorant person who doesn't smoke) would be the nicotine patches, in Australia, they're cost is pretty close to the price of the smokes and they last longer too, whilst also getting some kind of advice somewhere. Its an unfortunate situation and one that probably will be hard to get out of...

I could be wrong with a few things here, but I picked up these things from various places, so it may not all be spot on...but I believe the concepts behind them remain true.

But best of luck.

@Ombre, The Government gets a lot of money out of cigarettes (our one does at least) as it is taxed heavily to discourage smokers...But also provides easy money. hehe

Going threw withdrawals for a couple days.

I know that they are addictive, but if "your going to die!" isn't a motivator to stop, then you gots some problems.

When you weigh it against the amount we pay per year for problems associated with smoking it really isn't worth it.

haha I know ;p I was more trying to defend their side of it being hard...In a way I think of it like you do...but I also find it hard not to empathise for them for the situation they've gotten themselves into...Even if their breathe smells bad.

Aren't they supposed to make you feel good? That's what i'm getting at here. You don't smoke cigarettes because you think it'll benefit the economy.

I have never smoked a cigarrette in my life, but with how many people there are out there that are told by their doctors they need to quit and aren't able, I think that you are very much oversimplifying the matter. You are just showing that you really don't understand the situation.

I know people that haven't smoked for 15 years or more, and still crave cigarettes heavily.

Your opinion is wasted here, unless you're going to actually research what you're talking about, stop posting useless crap.

The majority of the people heres attitude towards the given situation is terrible.

There are many drugs out there much more addicting than cigarettes, but some people still manage to quit. You always have a choice.

Cigarettes don't cause as many people to hit rock bottom like more addictive drugs, meaning they really realize they need to quit because it's ruining their lives, so they're on board to do the best they can. Cigarettes on the other hand kill most people slowly, and I would say that somebody telling you might might not completely sink in if your mind is being constantly clouded by a continuous craving for the thing you need to quit... Bottom line, until you get really addicted to cigarrettes and then quit, can you talk. No, I take that back, until you become sargeant and then get really addicted to cigs, you will not know what it's like for him to quit, so stop giving him a hard time for a mistake and realize that its not as easy as it seems.
