there's easily about 3000 CS:S servers, and saying the average is a modest 8 players in each, there's 24,000 people right there. then there's another whole hemisphere that plays when the other sleeps, so now 48,000, just based on rough estimates. however, this number (i'll bet) falls far below sales of the actual game, online and from stores, so we can say about 48,000 active players is modest.

now, if we could say that columbine, (although i think it was before cs. i think?) a shooting in each state, involving at least 2 people as the perpetrators, and vtech were all the direct cause of CS:S, that's just 103:48,000. only a 0.2% chance that a person picked at random would be motivated by playing css to kill people in real life. now we'll use the results of a recent study on the effects of videogames to narrow it down further. i don't have time to find a source at the moment, but i remember the number 1 in 40 exhibiting a rise in agressive or violent behavior. this can be something as small as swearing more often. so now our percentage is down to 0.005%, taking into account 1 out of every 40 people have negatively affected personality since playing the game. if we stop there, then my (extremely) rough math can predict that only 240 of the 48,000 players will get affected by the game that will cause them to kill someone.

not to elaborate, but my quick calculation is full of holes. i did no research whatsoever, or proper math, only estimates based on my experience playing online with CS:S. there could be a LOT more people playing, and keep in mind, when i see the # of servers online, it's when i ping for servers to join, so it's only those at that very instant that i see. then there's likely people sharing games with family members or friends, and i'll bet there's alot more than 48,000 people in the world that play counter-strike. then there's saying every single US state has had at least one shooting involving 2 kids (or 2 seperate homocides) where counter-strike played a role in causing the murder. plus the assumption that every single person whose behaviour may become more agitated after playing will kill someone. i just now spoted a mistake, where i used the 48,000 worldwide sum against the 103 shooters, so you can multiply my end percentage by 2 to accomodate for that for now, because i'm not gonna go back and re-figure tonight.

anyways, so there's all those things above i didn't account for, plus how restricted weapons are (free to buy or outright banned), whether the person actually has the balls to carry out a massacre, or just get ticked off one night and stay home and play it off and get better the next day, or if they don't kill someone, but just get in a fight. after this, i'm gonna go to bed, but before that, i'd like to state that i would willingly take a trip to a shooting range in the woods with any random person that plays CSS and not be scared of being killed. if someone takes me up on this and hooks me up with a pedo though, i may get raped, but not shot.

so anyways, there's a rough figure of maximum amount of people that would kill others as an affect of playing counter-strike: about 0.01%; the ones that are just mentally unstable in the first place.

Yep, I use that flight sim. It's perfectly realistic. It even factors in screaming flight attendants and the in-flight hijack broadcasting system!

X-Plane and other sims are NOTHING to flying a real plane. You don't have the mental stress of having a gigantic metal cage underneath you when you're sitting in front of a screen, and the knowledge that one mistake WILL kill you. That's just like FPS games: Shooting a fake gun DOES NOT prepare you for a real gun: recoil, the mental stress, etc, etc.
Oh, I also played some Starcraft today. I'll join GTAF, and when he finishes flipping that blasted tank over, we'll put it into siege mode and take out those damn aliens.

"Both this guy and the Columbine shooters spoke English. Get the President on the phone!
We must stop this threat before it gets out of hand!"

"Uhh, English is the official language of multiple states."

"Dear God. We're doomed. <Bender>DOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOMED</Bender>"

I'm sure you're safest among non-English speaking peoples. Quick! Everyone, to New Mexico/Texas/California/Nevada/Utah/Arizona! The Mexicans! They will surely be our salvation.

I do have to say, after playing Gears of War, I watched SawIII. To tell you the truth, I wasn't that freaked out.
*guy crushes bones in foot to crawl out of chain* "Meh."
*girl is frozen to death* "kk."
*Jigsaw undergoes surgery on the skull* "I wonder if that's the actual sound of a drill on bone. Neato!"

But, I am not so desensitized to not be afraid. I had a dream the other night where my friend and I were eating, and he started choking.
So I leaned over and patted him on the back and said, "Suck it up." In my dream, he coughed up some foam (is that possible while you're choking? >_>) and I saw blood issue up from his mouth and eyes.
I was so scared. My heart was beating as if I had just run five miles straight, and I was in the coldest sweat I've ever had.
I would like Mr. Thompson so guage my insaneness level after seeing that.

This young man was quite human. He felt emotions that overpowered him, and drove him to commit such horrible acts.
I truly feel sorry for that young man, and his family. Saying that just 33 families changed is a lie. This young man's parents have to live with the knowledge that their baby killed 33 people and himself.

Now if you'll excuse me, I have a mall full of Zombeh's to kill. :3

Same here. I DO get afraid when it's something that I know is real life, and not acted out.

Video game and movie violence has probably desensitized to me to movie and video game violence. I can watch pretty graphic stuff in movies or cut Marcus in half with a chainsaw in Gears and not flinch or anything. But I can't even watch the dumbed down for TV surgery shows without being grossed out by it.

Oh, and Jack Thompson has absolutely no idea what he's talking about. He's just an overall uninformed moron who uses no statistics, proof, or even logic to back his absurd and sensationalist claims. The fact alone that he still doesn't understand that Bill Gates has no control over Counter-Strike after previously blaming him for some other incident shows he's a senile fool.

Regarding the whole thing about video games vs real firearms, yeah, you are going to learn a bit about guns from playing any accurate FPS game. Just like you'll about any other action if you see it in real life, movies, games, or read about it.

I've seen people pulled out of car wrecks with organs visible and such and not been moved. The internet/games/movies have indeed desensitized me to be completely honest, but by no means did they make me more volatile.

In real life, those kinds of things really get to me and mess me up for a few days. Hell, there was this thing over the phone of this person dying while talking to her friend (it was fake of course, but it sounded very real), but it was bad enough to screw up my day. Games, I could see or hear anything in games and be fine, though. They are nothing like real life at all.

There was this time where I was going backpacking, and we were on our way down to Southern Utah. We were on the freeway and some guy got in a REALLY bad accident. He was on a motorcycle running from cops, and he got in a wreck. He flew off his bike and flew over the barrier between the two ways, and was hit by an oncoming car. I didn't see the wreck of course, but I was there to see a real person in pure agony. His head was cracked way open, you could see his brains and crap and he was twitching in the ground in a horrible motion while the paramedics were keeping him alive until the helicopter came. I really don't want to see anything like that again, but unfortunately, that's life.

How can you be sure you just aren't someone who has a tolerance for these things anyways? Not to discredit you or anything, but I think it's worth taking into consideration that you can't know for sure how you'd have responded were you not a gamer/movie watcher.

Sorry to be blunt, but can't someone just shoot him in the face and say "BOOM HEADSHOT"...

But seriously, he will not win.

Jack Thompson pisses me off......honestly...i didn't even think Steam was owned by M$. I play counter strike alot and i don't see what is that bad about it. I know my parents sometimes get kinda sickened by some games i play, like in GoW when i chainsaw somebody. But i have just grown up with it since i was young (Doom was teh shit). He can't blame all of this on a game though. Yes it was tragic. But a game didn't cause this. Just because i play halo and GoW doesn't mean i am going to go insane and kill people. The kid was probably screwed up from the beginning.

Blam

Now for some guitar hero....maybe ill go insane and start a band >_>
