Australian Researcher Boosts DSL Speeds to 100 Mbps

Post by G.I.R. »

MegaGames wrote: According to Australian newspaper, The Sunday Morning Herald, Dr John Papandriopoulos from University of Melbourne developed a new algorithm capable of boosting DSL speed to 100 Mbps.

The algorithm Dr. Papandriopoulos developed aims to reduce the effect of cross-talk on ADSL line. "Many years ago people used to pick up the phone and make a phone call and you'd be able to hear a faint or distant telephone conversation taking place, and that's called cross-talk", he explained. " That is not an issue for voice calls these days but it becomes a problem when you're trying to wring more bandwidth out of these existing copper telephone wires [which power ADSL broadband connections]. This cross-talk in current day DSL networks effectively produces noise onto other lines, and this noise reduces the speed of your connection. "

The research was reviewed by Stanford University engineering professor John Cioffi who developed the computer chips inside the first DSL modems. Professor Cioffi, known to some as "father of DSL", was so impressed he offered the 29-year-old researcher a job at his Silicon Valley start-up company, ASSIA, which is developing ways to optimise the performance of DSL networks.

Melbourne Ventures, the University of Melbourne's commercialisation company, is now marketing the technology around to vendors of DSL equipment and modems. The vendors would then sell the supporting equipment to internet service providers worldwide for placement in their exchanges.

"We don't yet have a feeling for the extent to which it could be adopted ... [but] it (the new algorithm) has the potential to be adopted worldwide in any country that has a copper network", said Richard Day, commercialization associate at Melbourne Ventures.

Dr Papandriopoulos has already applied for two patents relating to his discovery and will be leaving for USA in about 2 weeks.
Neat. Now none of my friends with crappy DSL will have any more excuses.

I've no idea why you quoted that, but whatever.

I think he's saying that whereas it's capable of reaching 100mbps, there is nothing saying that will be the actual speed. It's like overclocking your video card... it can go higher, but it's not actually like that normally...

And I wouldn't speak so soon... I doubt we'll be seeing this within a few years.

Erm...Of course it won't reach 100mps as a constant rate....when you get your adsl2+ of 24mps do you go "UGH WHY ARENT YOU DOWNLOADING A 3Megabytes A SECOND LIKE IT SAYS?"

So essentially its drastically increased bandwidth capabilities with an rough maximum of 100mbs...And hey, who woulnd't be happy with slightly lower download speeds of 10 Megabytes per second? That'd be insane.

Holy shiitake mushrooms.

Australia definitely needs that kind of speed, living there away from the rest of the world, in the land of teh lag, as it said under some guy's location on H2Vista.net.

These kind so called 'solutions' are so messed up, what major ISP's should be doing is investing in is plenty of fibre optic cables to provide their internet services, not these aging methods of transferring data via copper.. whats 100mb in this day in age? what with the majority of households in asia having 100mb ranging to the 1gb mark and getting better, the US & UK really needs to stop hanging on to these old methods!

Asia>US/UK for ISP.

What kind of ISP's (and their service speeds) do you have over there? I'm curious especially if your calling Australia the land of the lag...

@Snave, yeh I know eh? but its a big investment especially for a place as big as America. But their speeds are crazy. They're phone download speeds are also at a very high rate.

Distance really doesn't effect your internet speed as much as you'd think... Assuming you're not using some really inefficient method.

Like for instance, using a satellite connection to bridge a gap from an island to the mainland, in the northernmost state in the US.
