Main Menu Question (PLEASE HELP!)

I keep seeing all these posts about main menu mods..
And, as far as I can tell they let you add more maps to the mainmenu...
is this correct.. and if so how do i go about installing one
Is it different for different maps...
And most importanly, do i have to have halo2 on my HDD?
