Xbox Live problem

Hello. I'm having problems going on xbox live using halo 2 from my Xbox. Halo 2 from my xbox meaning: I have Halo 2 down on my xbox harddrive.
If I run the game by inserting the halo 2 cd, it let's me connect to live, but if I play with the one in my harddrive, it doesn't give me any errors, but just doesn't log me in live.

EDIT: I just did some research and found out you can't play live if it's a game that you burned to the harddrive.. Then how is it possible to mod games such as Lockout, headlong, terminal, etc? (The games that are in the disc) I want to be able to mods those maps but since I can't edit those at all, I'm restricted to only few maps.. Is there a way?
