A modding competition

Hello once more!

I'm sorry, I seem to be very sticky happy in this section, but I hope you guys see the reasoning behind the stickies, I find them worthwhile, I hope you do too.........
Wait a second...Who cares? :P

Ok onto the real topic. Previously I talked to you guys about a Mod of the Month happening again. Whilst I did get some enthusiasts, I did not get as much as I wanted in order to actually start it again.

However, upon searching through the downloads section, I think we need something now... I'm not saying you guys suck at modding, by all means no (only me :( ). What I'm saying is, is that we need MORE content. Its as if we are suffering from a drought. Mods from last month can be found on the front page! That's not right at all, we need MORE!

So I bring forth TWO options, that's right, TWO options for you to choose. I want to see which one is more favoured and then I will start pursuing rule design and when it will being and how frequent it will be.

Here goes:
OPTION #1:
Standard Mod of the Month. Using a server kindly donated by one of the many people with servers (be it xzodia's, delta halo's or acemods') for mods to be submitted to. Hopefully I could arrange the winner to be hosted on halomods (If option #1 is chosen, I'd then *attempt* to talk to Iron_Forge....If he doesn't ignore me on AIM ;p )

So yeah I'd be building off tjc2k4's rules, modifying them slightly for todays modding standards and of course, would be helld monthly and would gather all nominated mods and the user's would vote. Winner would be auto-oustanding and perhaps a few more prizes.

OPTION#2:
A ScottyGEE styled competition. What's this you ask? I'd be basing it off my own skinning competition. In that I would choose a level or theme (most likley a theme for this one), give a set period of time in which to complete this mod and then have the users vote for the winner. Same thing applies with Option #1, external server hosting (as described above yah...) auto outstanding, special prizes and hopeful halomods hosting.

_____

One thing to suggest: With the user voting, I would hope to provide a vote styling app, similar to the halomods post generator... In that you type the name of the mod, the main reason, followed by a short description of why the mod was so tasty for you.
______________________

Both these competitions would give motivation to users and modding groups to motivate and create mods and they will be rewarded for their efforts and would get recognition for them also (I don't think people mod for fame here, but recognition [see hall of fame] is always a nice thing)

So what do you guys think? Which option do you choose? I'd use a poll, but they have a habit of breaking...Plus, posts always give a much more meaningful answer

-ScottyGEE out!

Finding a level to mod is a little hard these days I think its a good idea. But I personally need a push to what level should be done. Just like your skinning competitions you limmit everyone to one level and that would be a better thing to have. But thats up to you and the people. I havent really seen any mods on the newwer levels Tombstone and Desolation and i think thats bhecause not everyone has them and if people do one guy has tombstone and teh other has tombstone1 If i scoll down the main menu and look at all teh levels I kinda just want to walk away. Im kind of getting sick of all the stock levels. If someone converted a single player bsp and then posted a down load and you said you have to mod this level and you can do what ever you want but only to that level i think that would push me to actually want to submit a mod. But what ever happens Ill try to work up something epic.

I prefer option 2...MoTM tended to go to whoever happened to release an awesome mod during that month...Which sorta worked when it was a monthly thing, because then it didn't matter how long you worked on your mod, when you released it, it'd be competing with other mods of that time frame...With a competition like this, some people will want to compete, but are getting a late start compared to someone who's already been working on a mod for the last 3 months, and can jump in at the last second and dominate...That's not to say they couldn't take their mod, and quickly tweak it to match the theme, but meh...

Any mod can be hosted on halomods...As long as it's under 10MB...It can even be added to the repository if it's a serenity...I still believe most mods could be under 10MB if every app and tool out there didn't bastardize the maps so badly...But thats not my fault... ;o)

I also disagree with auto-outstanding...Just because a mod wins a competition, doesn't make it outstanding...Sorry...But I don't think having an outstanding mod counts for anything if people just go "this mod isn't outstanding, but is only here cause they won a competition with it"...Thats not to say the winner won't be outstanding of course... ;oP

None of these two options :lol: as said Dark, maybe limit the contest in one sbsp from a SP map that would be cool =D

Agreed, I would want a pre SP -> MP to work with. No matter what you mod a stock map to it just has the same old shape as it used to. I do like the idea though!

It would be nice if it were one of the new maps, I haven't seen anything impressive done to them yet.

I agree with most of what I_F said.

dH will happily host anything that needs to be hosted.

Scotty's so competitive >_>

Luckily I'm in the mood to mod. I hope you put the timeline long enough to let people make awesome mods taking into consideration School(which mine didn't start yet). :)

Thanks GEE.

You want me to make that Post Generating app?

Just tell me exactly what you want.
All I know so far is
<Map Name, big bold>
<Table of features, YES - Systemlink, etc>
<Preview Image>
<Brief description of the map? Here or before preview Image?>
<LINK>

;P

Geo not the new maps, Tombstone is hard to skin because it already looks great, half the people will ruin it. And desolation in my opinion seems too boring and small. ;/

Also Scotty, Go with Posts.

I also have a server halotech.org

I'd happily host anything aswell.

Acemods would also happily host anything needed.

- I would go for option 2 as I see that option one, normally doesn't have as good as a result as option 2.

It also makes judging harder. But, what ever.

Option 2 seems more organized.

I like option 1.

Well, if you started with Option #1. I could then release the one mod I have been working on for approximately 1 year. (which was worked on on and off)

Therefore, that would NOT be fair to anyone in my case.

Option #2 would mean I would have to make a new mod. And we all know how long it takes me to make a mod. However, this competition will not be based on one man.

However, I kinda like the idea if you made a theme, and we make a mod based on that theme on any map. Then make a deadline in which mods are released. Gives everyone a fair chance to make a mod and it also gives them freedom.

(In reference of option #1)
Not only that, but if you don't finish on time, then you can just submit it to the next one :)

I plan on releasing my mod before the end of monday (It takes some time placing coordinates by hand since BSP viewing is not a option). If option #1 is chosen though I'll wait till the contest begins and then release it.

It's true that derelict and tombstone needs mods but for one, not many people have them and for two, there are annoying versions of the map. I wouldn't want to see mods released for them for the hard time getting the map to work right.

Exactly, when MOTM was about new mods were plentiful so it worked. But now like you said scott, "Its as if we are suffering from a drought". The point I'm trying to make is that perhaps a larger timeframe should be considered.

Anyways I'm with option 2. Option 1 has already been played out like a million times..or should I say months...

I say option 1. I have a few mods I've been working on, and it'll give me motivation to finish them. :)

Option 1 because i feel that option 2 limits alot of creativity.

I nominate option #2. I like the way the skinning competition is held. If option #1 is chosen then it broadens the horizon a little too far. Although there are great tutorials...not everyone can do the things that others can. Be it, there computers, or even the knowledge. Keeping it a little more tight knit with option #2 might keep things more organized anyways.
