I see way too many posts about what people should do for a mod so im going to help you out.

When i want to make a new map i usually look at scenery to try to figure a look basis.

Try adding some lightmaps to a simalar map and see what it looks like.

think of how you would play the game and what would be a good way to play it.

also look at other peoples maps and get rough ideas but dont copy. nobody likes a map that rips off another.

honestly think for yourself, dont let others think for you. there are plenty tutorials to get you started and let it go from there.

what other people think has most likely been done before. so experiment and try things nobody has before. maybe you can find somthing that noone has before. thats how modding gets better :D

I like brainstorming with my friends whether it be on these forums or not. Just because you ask for ideas doesn't mean you're not thinking for yourself or are not able to produce your own ideas. With all the critisism of mods put out nowadays, it is better to get imput and help with ideas before you make your mod. Atleast that way, you have a rough idea about how people will respond to it when you release it. I encourage people to ask for ideas, as long as they atleast put some thought and time into it.

Think about your favorite maps, whether they are clean or modded, and ask yourself what makes you like them, what makes you play them again and again.

Using just machs and blocs, you can construct an entire BRAND NEW level that no one has ever played before. A map like Ascension, Elongation or even Lockout could be built this way. You just have to come up with a good idea and do it. (Note: Try to stay away from the overused, large machs like the specimen storage lift, the gondola and the key. These have been exhausted. Also stay away from race tracks.). Then, of course, you can skin it however you like.

Try making a map just using boulder blocs and wreckage machs from Burial Mounds, for example. Or pick one of the SP-MP conversions that has been done, isolate a section of the map that would be fun to play, and throw some machs, blocs and scenery in there to spice it up.

I personally am not at all impressed these days by skins, skies, lightmaps and other cosmetic changes alone, no matter how well done they are. They can make a good map great, but by themselves they do very little for me. There are already some fantastic examples out there, and we do not need more of them. I may be in the minority here, but remember that we've been playing these maps for years, and the ones that aren't dead horses by now are at least very, very tired. So try to do something that alters the gameplay in more than just subtle ways.

Like making a brand new map.

i got one for modeling which isn't very hard look at things in your everyday life and see maybe how you can incorporate that into a map like i saw a broken cob of corn and it looked like a spiral stair case and i thought dang i can model that :D
