How does Xbox Live check if a map has been modified?

I have an idea that Xbox Live(or Bungie)checks the map to see if its modified by checking the MD5 Checksum but im not sure.....
so any information about this subject is Greatly Appreciated
and if they are checked by that plz tell me all you know about MD5's
