Compressing maps?

Ive been modding xbox's for a year or so now (hardware/casemods) and am a current user on the xbox scene forum. Because they dissaprove of game modifying and stuff i thought i would come here instead.

Im fairly new to the halo modding community and i would like to ask some questions before i get started. When i got my first xbox modded i used dvdtoxbox to copy halo2 onto the stock hdd to have a little try at modding before i got a bigger hdd. I took some maps off the xbox via ftp and started changing little easy things like making warthogs fly and that. I then fixed the encryption and ftp'd back, overwriting the original map (colag i belive). Supprise supprise the map failed to load and i pretty much gave up then and there.

Now a few months after that i have decided to come back to modding after seeing other mods that people have done but hopefully getting it right this time. Since the maps didnt work the last time i thought it was probably the hdd that was nearly full which was causing it so ive just got myself a small 40gb to play with.

With that in and halo on i would like to know if this method will work without failed to load:

1. FTP colag to PC
2. Open map in dothalo
3. Change warthog physics to fly ect.
4. Save changes
5. Fix encryption
6. FTP back to xbox overwriting current map

This is basicly what i did last time when i thought it was the hdd size but ive read in other topics that people compress the maps too, will i have to do this to make it work? Will it have been the problem i had before and it wasnt the HDD?

If so could someone direct me towards a tut about compressing or some programmes that do it and how to use them.

Thanks for the help,
Polat.

I think you have to resign it if you are going to overwrite the old one and not add it to the mainmenu.

He did resign it.
You need to disable your AU I believe. While in FTP go to E/tdata/4d530064/ and rename $u to $u1. Then your maps should load.

So that was the reason why my map failed to load and it wasnt the size of the HDD matter?

No, the hd size shouldn't matter. I have the normal size and everything works for me.

it's in tdata then go to the folder that ends in 64 and then look in there if you don't have one then you don't have the autoupdate

I dont have one... is that a good thing or a bad thing?

Do you have the new maps? If you don't, then you shouldn't have the 64 folder.

No, i shouldnt have the new maps, its one of my non live xbox's

One more thing, it doesent seem to load the maps pretty fast, it takes like 2-3 mins to load up. Could this be the low space on the HDD?

Edit: So if i make some alterations to the map, resign then ftp back they should work fine?

Slow loading is typical for "new" maps. It is loading the map into cache. After the map loads one time the rest will be lightning quick.

After it loads up the first few times it should load faster usually.

Sweet!

About my other question, Will everything be fine and dandy in i make a few changes to the map like different projectiles then save, fix encryption and FTP back?

Because i did this last time and they allways failed to load.

It should as long as you hit fix encryption in dot halo

Okay, i'll give it a try, whats the best mod to test with?
Flying warthog?

anything that modifys the map so yes that would work.

Any mod that has a really noticable effect on gameplay. Ex/ you wouldn't wanna test a mod that has a warthog modded, but there is no warthog that spawns.

One more thing before i FTP back to the xbox, do i have to press the apply PPF button because ive read that people make PPF's for maps.

GAHHHHERHRHRRRRRRHRHRRR!!!!111

Apparently i failed to load the map.... do i have to clear some sort of cache before i load a modded map? Its just doing the same as last time and i seem to be doing everything as you say correctly.

Anyone any ideas whats going wrong?

Does the fix encryption actually resign the map? Because when i put a map instead of the original i have to use a resigner because the fix encryption never works for me and i get the same problem.
