Problem injecting bumpmaps.

Alright, I have searched these forums through and through and have yet to find an answer to this question. Can someone please give me the steps to successfully inject or import, which ever is technically correct, a bumpmap into a map.
So far I have made a little progress on my own (I think) but I have yet to succesfully get one in the game. I have extracted a bumpmap from the game using DarkMatter into a .jpeg file and then did my editing in Photoshop. But when it comes time to save it, I have no idea. I figured that since it is of 'P8' format according to DotHalo that this is what I would save it as. So, I save it as an 8 bit index with every possible configuration of options imaginable but have yet to get a good one in game. Oh, I used DotHalo or H2Edit, I forget which one, to import it and it says that it successfully imports it but when previewed, the image is completely trashed.
Sorry for such a long explanation but I am trying to make it clear so that someone will be able to help me out. I do appreciate any help that is given because this little problem has been stumping me for the past couple days. Thanks.
