Problem injecting bumpmaps.

Alright, I have searched these forums through and through and have yet to find an answer to this question. Can someone please give me the steps to successfully inject or import, which ever is technically correct, a bumpmap into a map.
So far I have made a little progress on my own (I think) but I have yet to succesfully get one in the game. I have extracted a bumpmap from the game using DarkMatter into a .jpeg file and then did my editing in Photoshop. But when it comes time to save it, I have no idea. I figured that since it is of 'P8' format according to DotHalo that this is what I would save it as. So, I save it as an 8 bit index with every possible configuration of options imaginable but have yet to get a good one in game. Oh, I used DotHalo or H2Edit, I forget which one, to import it and it says that it successfully imports it but when previewed, the image is completely trashed.
Sorry for such a long explanation but I am trying to make it clear so that someone will be able to help me out. I do appreciate any help that is given because this little problem has been stumping me for the past couple days. Thanks.

i have played with bumpmapping for a long time, and every time i inject the modified bumpmaps back into the game, they end up being scrambled,

i use CH2R for injecting bumpmaps, but ive never been able to get it to work properly either... (my jeeps 6 spoke alloy wheels look crap)

i have saved in A8 (because thats what CH2R says it is) and i get the same scrambling.

Yeah, some people have done it here at halomods and even made a pictures topic to show it off but won't tell how for some reason.

I guess they feel like they are better than our sweet little "community".

Those kind of people are the ones I think lowest of btw.

Anyway, what's the difference between bumpmap and bitmap?

A bump map is the thing in the game that gives a wall a certain grainy texture or something of the like. If you see a speckle in a wall or on a vehicle or anything it's probably a bump map.

Bump maps are textures.

Lol, name says it all...
Makes sense. Bitmaps are the pictures and bumpmaps are the textures.

Thank you all for the responses.

Thats what I figured because I knew that at some point I had seen some successfully made bumpmaps in game. To bad those people are too greedy to help the rest of the modding community out.
Anyways I promise that if by some miracle I do figure it out that I will post back on here to let you all know because that is what I thought this modding community was about, sharing our knowledge with each other.
Thanks again for what information you did give me.
