milkshape or lightray works good to. personally i have 3dsmax and i was always getting an error when i injected the models. milkshape was the only one that worked for me.

now when you save it, do you export it to save it as a obj file?

yes, just export it as a .obj file and give it a randome name then just rename it as the load you edited and replace the origional one with it.

lol, 3dsmax has an object importer built in... just go to file -> import and change the file format that you are browsing for to "Wavefront object (*.obj)" and select the file you are looking for. Check this
tutorial for more details.

i have that full version and it still give me a error message!
when i import anything using wavefront obj import.
and it will not work, but when i download a object import program it works
but is say i have to buy a full version, that version does not allow anything over 100 points!

that simply means that whatever program you are using to extract the obj files, is corrupting them. For example, the Dark Matter alpha gives almost everyone and error when the try to use objs from it. ADI seems to do great though, i've never had a problem.
