switchin firing effect

im trying to switch the firing effect on mutilple weapons,but im keep having
this same promblem.
lets say im trying to change the effect on the carbine i go to the weap tag
dep/loan id ,carbine_fire.
then i wanted to change it to how the gauss fires,so i switch effect of carbine fire to the gauss fire,but im not able to see the distortion ripple when i fire
why is this?
