16 million colors and creating an alpha map

Hi guys, new to the modding scene, and I've been watching those video tutorials about making a map. I've downloaded Paint Shop Pro XI and I get stuck at the very beginging. I'm having trouble making a 16 million color file like the guys says I should.

I'm not sure what option I should select as there is no 24 bit option in the color depth section. The only options I see are:
RGB 8 bit
&
RGB 16 bit

Is this something to do with the program being a trial version?

Second question: I moved on a bit anyways and got to the part where the guy said I needed to create and alpha map. It appears some things have changed in between version 8 and 11 so if someone can tell me how to do it in the new version, that'd be great.

Ok, complete tutorial coming your way.

How to make a map layout in Paint Shop Pro X. (should be relatively the same)

1. Create new picture. 16 bit RBG.
2. Draw dirt paths (NOT GRASS). Go to effects, the first option, then Blur it.

3. Go to layers at top, then to show all (it should be in one of te extension side boxes).
4. Pick BLACK (RBG OF 0) colour for a grass map. Colour AROUND paths, and between the grey area and your paths.
5. Go to layers, find merge all (flatten).
6. Pick a green and colour where you coloured with your black (should look like a checker board when painting with black).
7. Blur again.
8. Go to airbrush, pick a darker green, and run your mouse over the green area's (DONT CMPLETELY COLOUR IT, IT SHOULD HAVE LOTS OF SPACE INBETWEEN). Do the same for the grey, but black.
9. Blur again.
10. Save. Make sure it is a .Tif or Tiff file. in options (in the save box) make sue it is uncompressed, and it RBG.
11. Save to levels\yourmap\bitmaps as youmap.tif or .tiff

When I use the paint brush, a message comes up saying I need to convert the file to 8 bit RGB. Is this okay?

When I go to save, there is only a maps folder. The video I downloaded said I would find the levels folder inside the Data folder. Should I create these folders?

Do you have the HEK installed?

No, is that what I need to do?

In a completely unrelated subject, can you tell me why I can't join a server on Blood Gulch after I downloaded and installed the giant map pack?
