projectile animating?

when making custom weapons, how do you animate projectiles.
is it a solid model that is linked into a frame, or do i need particle ainmations for the bullet/plasma bolt/beam

also, in gureilla, are any specific values required to change the speed of the projectile.

(yes noob question i know, but thanx for the time [whoever answers])
