ok, just gonna post an old render because it looks cool. don't critique this one much cuz there's not a whole lot of work put into this one.

Bravo!
Very well done,
This is your first render? amazing,
have you done 3ds before or is this actually your FIRST render?
either way well done,
I'm planning on doing some of this myself, Video renders that is.
I'm an amateur film maker, and I've been thinking about going digital for a long time, since I saw that the Halo 2 models can go .3ds now.. perfect!
If u want I could help ya with the particles and stuff required for weapons, if u want to add them.
Quick suggestion though,
You ALWAYS want to put points of reference on flat planes like that.
The multiple charachters does do this, but static objects work better, a simple set of pillars, or a few rocks and a tree works perfectly,
maybe since u seem to have this set in space on a metal platform
orbiting Earth, an antenna or some bumps in the ground work.
One of the few times u can get away with no statics is the loved "white infinity" (u know the matrix set-up, or the "meet with God" room)
Just a friendly suggestion.
keep up the good work!

zmann966, when i say that i am new at this, i mean that i had never touched 3ds max before i started doing halo 2 stuff and i have never done anything except halo 2 stuff. i have no idea how to do particles so maybe you could help me out there. i do like the idea of having more scenery, but i have been having trouble deciding what to put. i can't even figure out what it is they are standing on in the first place (small planet/moon/space station). I have recently learned how to use crowds. I have 500 battle cruisers that fly toward earth overhead and they all repel each other and go at different speeds while avoiding the planet (sphere) they are standing on. it's an awesome site to see but everytime i render, it crashes. i originally thought it was because of all the battle cruisers but i crashes even without them. i will post a render as soon as i get this resolved.
if you plan on getting into this deeper, i can help you out alot,

Then my astonishment only multiplies tenfold.
I remember my first 3DS render.
It was for a class at school,
All it was was some meta particles spewing out of a cylinder and falling down some stairs off the edge of a plane.
None of it looked as good as what you have here.
heh, lol, Its always a good thing to have a settings and somewhat of an idea b4 u start creating,
but all you really have to do is find out if they're on some space debris, a human cruiser
(outside of course), or just anything orbiting Earth. Not too hard.
The overhead dynamics will definentally add to your scene, especially is u have them interact with the fight with MC, say dropping more Elites?
From those pods? OR a Longsword(Pelican) and Seraph crash into the plane near MC, that would give not only a good intro (they are fighting and both crash into the plane)
MC crawls out of the Human ship, and the Elites hop out of the Dropship.
Then you would have your dynamic Intro, your static scenery for reference of movement and scale. and it would be pimp! lol
I'm getting mainmenu.maop and shared.map from a friend, because for some reason I cant access them on my HDD or Disk... meh.
I will get started on all the models via Platt's awesome tutorial.

There's a tutorial to extract the models and skins,
animations pretty simple (though I cant seem to get it down)
uhh link for the model extraction
http://www.halomods.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=22376
U'll need a lot of programs and stuff, but they are easy to come by..
except Photoshop... I still can't find that online, I have a CD of it, but cant find it.

I have found my new desktop..

T_T... Its' so beautiful...
Quick suggestion though, cut down on the reflections of the cruisers by just a little bit... 10-15%
ohh, and Think you got enough stars? lol, jk.
if you can eliminate about 30-50% of those, makes the eye focus more on the foreground rather than the over-bombarding backround.
get rid of some stars especially near the sun, ever been driving at night and an oncoming car has thaier headlights on? you cant see anything around those lights, same with looking into a flashlight, everything around it fades to black... same with the sun (big flashlight right?)
