Stolen Mod

I spent all weekend working on this modded version of Boarding Action, it was supposed to be a snipers haven.

I had it up on my server for several hours yesterday, but nobody would join. So i took it down.
And then, today, I look for modded Boarding Action servers on Halo PC. I find one and enter, then I find myself to be in my own modded map on someone else's server.

My question is, is there some sort of tool to download maps off people's servers? I know beyond any doubt that that was my map, and I can prove it with screenshots if anybody cares that much.

BTW, can someone point me to a tutorial telling how to write stuff on walls in maps?

ok..

1. was this a actual server map that was modded or a gametype?

2. what made this map "modded" as in "what did it have different then stock?"

3. writing on walls like you would in CS:S i have never heard of unless its in CE. your in the PC section so im going off that. in order to change a texture to something different it has to be in HMT editing the bitmaps for that map. as far as applying a "spray" i dont think it can be done at all.

4. how long have you had halopc cause it think i know where this topic is going...

Are you sure you replaced you're modded version with the original before playing on someone else server?

im going to place my bets on this..

he made a modded gametype being something like "all snipers, no shields" or something. he was running it off his home dedi which no one would join cause people running home dedis doing snipers gives them 0 ping which is gay to fight aganist.

now he takes his home server down and goes to a lobby game and boom, another server running the typical "snipers, no sheilds" or whatever variant.

im also willing to bet hes either..

a. on halo trial
b. had halo less then a month

not being rude but thats what my radar is picking up.

I believe that was a program called Sentinel (or HaloCESpy, which I never got to work), which is hosted and made right here at halomods. That program allows the person to download a map tat they do not have, so they can have it as their own.

Its a shame that happened to you. :(

From now on, do not do that (meaning go online with it) Test it offline, thats what some people did. Also, make sure if you want to have it online, then its fully finished. Not "It needs moar stuff" Not "It needs just one little thing" Nothing untill its FULLY FINISHED. Then you can go online with it.

Sentinel wasnt a very smart choice, as people that do not have this map, can steal other players maps, and call it their own.

Edit: Pepsi beat me to it, but he has a point. When you mod something, always make a backup of the map your modding. Reason is, modding boardingaction.map is going to make every server you join, into your map. U have to move that modded map somewhere else, and then take the backupped one and move it to the maps folder.

Edit2: Gawd, everyone is posting. >:U let me post! :P

Ok, Proved.

You need to switch your modded map (in this case boardingaction.map) with the original (the ones that came off the disc) otherwise youll see everyone elses server exactly like your map. Thats why that server had your map. You didnt switch the modded map with the original, so it looked like he had your map.

I feel like an idiot right now. So that's why the guy wouldn't respond to my questions about the floating sniper platform made of oxygen tanks.

Sorry for taking your time. Lesson learned...

And pepsi, you were wrong.

Couldn't you just change the decal for one of the weapons? I'm pretty sure hat that is how it is done in CS:S.

...

H2CE.

They had that spray can. It shot black circle decals, pretty much didnt work on air, only worked on ground and walls, and it stayed for a while.

I do not know if they are still around, ask them, they might know.

That's not how sentinel worked in the slightest. You had to upload the modded maps to the sentinel mod list here. It was a great idea. It's just that no one used it and it's now defunct. Any map that's halfway decent (generally) isn't CSS and requires some one to download a copy.

So, i guess this whole thing was a misunderstanding?

I didn't know that a mod would superimpose itself onto maps in unmodified servers. So, yes, it was a misunderstanding.
