Halo Models Question

I've been trying to fix up some halo models ( fixing holes, changing appearance, ect.) in 3D Studio Max 7. Basically to do this, I have to import and export the files from 3DS Max, but I don't know what the correct settings need to be when I import and export them, because when I try to inject the models over the original ones, I get an error.

It's because 3ds max adds extra verticies and indicies, basically, it won't work.

Use a program called Milkshape, 3DS Max isn't good for remodeling, only modeling.
