We at the ZMT forums *points to sig* have thought of an idea to get members to join our site.. but we want to know what YOU think of it... would you join a modding contest with this prize:

unlimited file hosting with your own ftp
a custom rank (whatever you want as long as its not offensive)
and a moderator postion

if you have a suggestion for the prize, please tell us..

We're going to talk to the admins here, and see if they're willing to give you that custom rank here on halomods as well, both here on the user forums, and on the files forums. And in addition to all this junk you'll get the most important thing of all: Bragging rights over your fellow modders. Then there'll be some runner up prize, not quite as good as the winning one, but at least you'll get something.

I'm sad because I won't win... unless! Ahh, no. I won't... yeah I guess the ZMT Community is very creative (Kinda, including me.) Who would have ever thought it at HM? Anyways, I got an idea for second place... here's an exact quote. *Searches ZMT for his idea*
I think something like a plugins pack, some models... the works. Stuff in beta... etc.
Hah! Found it...

Yes, first, we need to know that there will be a fair amount of people participating in this contest before we start it, but we feel confident that you guys will want to, so that you can gloat. Once we do start the contest, you'll have to upload them onto the net somewhere, and then post a link, and pics on our site. If you don't post it on our site, how can we know you're participating in the contest? When the contest starts we'll announce on the front page of halomods, and our site, and maybe some other sites, that the contest has started, and you should start entering your mods. We haven't decided officially that the contest is going to start, but once we've decided that enough people have shown interest in it, we'll probably start it shortly thereafter. We will have an official set of rules up on our site (once we've decided what they are), and we hope to have the contest started soon. As for the runner-up prize, we're probably going to give a smaller version of the winning prize, meaning instead of unlimited upload space, just quite a lot of it, and maybe a custom rank.

Anyway, we'll have all the details within a couple of days, possibly by tomorrow.

To make this a bit less challenging, the members of our modding team (the PC zealot modding team) will not be participating, other members of the site will, but not the team members. This is mainly because if they would have won (and it's quite possible that one of them would have) a lot of you would have thought that the contest was rigged or something.

Ok people, we've (well, actually phenom) been talking to admins (actually only one), they haven't reached a decision yet, but the word maybe was mentioned several times. Another thing that was mentioned is possible Elite status on the files forum, thus allowing the winner to post his or her mods in the Halomods Elite forum. However, since the word maybe was mentioned, there's no guarantee. The prize of winning the contest seems to be getting better all the time, so I'd suggest entering. Still no official decision on what the runnerup will get, however it will make participating worth it. You should all start thinking about what you're going to do for your mod. Remember we're looking for creativity, originality, and overall entertainment, and maybe some other things.

Hell yeah. I doubt I'll win, but who cares? I do it for the fun.

I could always post the enhanced version of my popular AI mod that I've secretly been working on... the AIs behave more or less the same way as a human opponent and they're insane shots with any weapon...

I like to think most modders mod for the fun. You never know who'll win, and even if you don't it doesn't matter, at least you tried, and a lot of people will see your mod, and they'll probably like it.

As of right now, we're having a bit of trouble deciding if we're going to do this by poll, or by several judges. There are good arguments for both and against each other. With polls, we're letting you decide who's the best modder, but there's the people who cheat the polls by using proxies, and other computers to vote more than once. With judges, we've got unbiased opinions of people who know what they're talking about, but then you guys might start thinking the contest was rigged or something like that, or the judges may actually have a biased opinion of some of the maps, or more than likely they'll have different opinions from you, and you'd be pissed off or something. If someone can give a REALLY good reason for one or the other, and no one can really go against it, please tell us.

How about Judges panel select top 5 using scores on set parameters such
as Originality, playability, technical skill etc.

Members vote for the winner.

Yes, very good thinking Decoy. Now all we need is judges. If you would like to be a judge, check this topic out, and post there why you think you would be a good judge for this contest.

[edit]We've got a really big dillemma. We're going to have the judges grade the maps on a point system, but part of those points are skins and models, and they're not mandatory. So, if we get rid of the grade for skins and models for the mods that don't have any new ones, that throws off the point totals in comparison to the ones with new models/skins, and if we just subtract the points, it's not fair because other modders did skins and models, and got more points. If we don't grade on models/skins, it's not fair to the modders who do make them. I thought of getting rid of the point system, then just have the judges choose the 5 mods they think are best, but that would most likely end up in multiple ties that can't be broken. So basically, we're up shit creek without a paddle.

Sure, I'll join. As everyone's said, it's just for fun. I don't think I'd win, but who knows? Maybe I will.

Extra credit for skins on the mod? .....Hmmm

I guess the best thing we can do is just not include the points for models/skins into the total possible points, if a mod doesn't have one.

Once we've decided to start the contest, we'll be accepting mods for about 10 days. Any mods that try to enter after those 10 days will not be accepted. I'll get back to you guys about what we're going to grade the mods on, once we've decided what we're looking for.

Sometime within the next day or 2... or 3, there should be a stickied topic about this with all the details, in the files forum (because we know people with power), and a brief article on the contest on the main page.

[edit]This is what we've got so far as what we're grading the mods on. I think there needs to be more, but none of us can really think of anything else to grade on. If you have ideas, suggest them.

creativity = x/10
complexity = x/10
strategic game play = x/20
"fun-ness" = x/25
models/skins (if any) = x/10
OVERALL: x/75

Wait...So if we don't have skins or models, then our score is x/65?

Posted: Sun Apr 24, 2005 12:44 pm
by Phenomena
well sort of.... i think we could get the percent of waht you got out of 65 so say it was 60/65 the precent would be 93% so then we take the 92% and find what 92% of 75 is.. which would be 69/75

therefore if they got 60/65 withou skins it would be equilvant to 69/75

Don't worry about it too much, it'll work out.

Right now, we're discussing allowing contestants to use other people's skins/models, under some conditions. I think it's going to work out like this:
You can use someone else's models/skins, as long as that person isn't a participant in the contest, or a judge of the contest.

Again, it's not guaranteed to be like that, but it's very possible.

And we still need some suggestions as to what we should do about the grading scale. If you think that there's something we should be grading the mods on, and it's not in the list in my previous post, let us know.
