3ds max is the equivalent of 3ds max 3.

bungie used 3dsmax 5 to make halo.

and max can render, animate, video render :D, etc...

but yes for a beginner you should use gmax. i have personally never used gmax for modding (opened it once on an old computer to see a train model :P) but for actually serious modeling i have only known 3ds max.

I thinks they are in you outbox until they are recieved/replied
And gmax is a nice program, that's what i used to make crisis. 3ds max is basically the same but upgraded.
Gmax is missing bridge and connect. Bridge can be use for over 200 different operations. Connect is useful aswell.

I totally agree that 3ds max is better, i was going bridge-crazy today, which you can't do with gmax. I was just explaining that you can make cool stuff with gmax.

Offtopic: If GMax as good as Maya in terms of rendering and fast run-times?

Ontopic: Yay, another map.

Woah, get your signature down, and it's not allowed to be animated either.
For anybody still wondering where FTD has gone, here it is.
