And you have to know VB.NET btw...and I don't want to spend a lot of cash on the compiler....thing...they use for it (correct?).
.NET compilers are free from Microsoft? I think you'd just be missing the IDE...

And as far as learning C or C++ or C#, having learned C++ and looked over a lot of C and a fair share of C#, I'd say C++ would be the way to go. While all the Cs aren't the same, I'd have to agree they do have a lot in common. And it's not as big of a shift from one to the other once you learn one well, so rather than try to check out all 3, concentrate on just one and try to master it as much as possible.
This could also be affected by the fact that I learned VB inbetween C++ and C# so C# reminds me of an odd mix of the two. Anyway, if you want to learn a C, go with C++.
