I am a complete newbie when it comes to modding halo. Can someone point me in the right direction to find out info on why I need a mod chip? How do I get a mod from my computer to my Xbox? These questions might sound stupid to most of you but any help will be much appreciated.

if you want to mod your xbox you should seriously consider looking at www.xbox-scene.com. Once you have done that you need a hex editer and FlashFXp. You can search anywhere for this on the net. Once you have all that stuff and your mod chip installed you need a copy of evox ( I recommend Slayers evox auto installer) so you can FTP to your xbox. After that then you need to either transfer cache maps .00 (for single player maps) or .03 ( for multiplayer maps). Then grab your self a copy of Spark edit 3 or Helpful Halo hacking tool. You can read about what to do next in the tutorials on Halomods.com about basic map editing.

A modchip is a chip for holding a seconday bios, as the xbox's regular bios doesn't allow the use of many things, so to circumvent that, you use a modchip, which has a customized bios that the xbox loads in place of the original one.

however, once you have a chip, i dont know why anyone in their right mind would pay $50 a year or whatever membership when theres sites like xbconnect.com that are free... even better then stupid microsoft sponsored stuff that you pay out your bum for.

How do I take a ppf file off the internet and load it to my Box?

Hmm, for one you would need a modded xbox, evox and flashfxp. So you can transfer the files from your xbox to your computer then patch them with the ppf using ppf-o-matic, then send them back to your xbox and have fun.
