Just get hmt3.5 and .netframework.... Then start to mod with hmt, its the simpliest and easiest modding tool there is, or atleast it depends on what you are trying to do

ok thanks, ill try that for halo!! But what if i wanted to mod other games with a hex editor or halo with a hex editor? I just want to know how to find the values and offsets of different things in games and how to edit the meta and ident and how different edits affect different objects in different games. Sorry for all the details but i want to learn this stuff and make my own in-depth mods.

will, there are tuts around here, such as
http://www.freewebs.com/thecovenantunde ... torial.htm
this shows what hexing can do(which HMT3.5 can do much easier and faster) But you will need to find the offset lists for the maps, im not sure where to get them...My AIM is grunt1287 give me a line if you still need help with anything

Another question. Do you have to edit the cache file every time you edit a map or can you edit the actual .map file that comes with the game.

You can edit the cache and then compress the cache into a permanent map. But then you have to run Halo from the HardDrive.
