teaching yourself is hard and long and it takes a lot of fiddling and depending on what age you are it might take a very long time. its best if you get a push start by just even a msn person teaching you a few commands and the basics of that language . btw if your starting i would sugest www.python.org as your first language.

yea i am 13 and i started learning programming when i was 12 i got a course from a camp for 1 week
Edit: if you need programming for your school that has got to be one unique school i would be glad even if i could do programming 4 years into high school (im not sure of your system but i guess ur in americia but i have a different system where i come from)

well you dont need you but it would be a good idea if you are doing it for collage. and i would strongly sugest that you get a head start because most people would have probally done the same (but not all) and once you get the first bit over the rest slides in and btw im making a tutorial (and finishing it when i get over all my emails every day ( around 5) lol so check it out and www.sparkicks.com and go to learn to program and also go to www.python.org and docs and there are some more there

If you want to learn to program, i would suggest taking wither a web based language, such as php or javascript (www.php.net, www.w3schools.com), C++ or VB.

Web based languages are good as you can test them right off, but you need special servers for php.
C++ is also quite easy, but you need to compile it for it to work.

I've never used VB, but it seems very versatile, and looks simple.

if your starting off you need to start with something simple. u dont want to dash right in since there are not a lot of starting to program tutorials for those languages but for python and vb there are loads

I was able to teach myself GML (Gamer Maker Language) over a period of 4 years. Its fun. Heres my favorite thing i wrote with it.

{
if(!you.likeme){
if(getmessage("Really?","Yes";1,"No";0)){
with(you)instance_destroy()
}
}
}

^^ yeah, I tried it, gave up I wanted a wider selection of codes to play with :P so I got into VB...This is my last year of school...Then I can go to college...Im doing PC courses for sure, Not programing...yet...But I suggest if you really want a carrer in programing then do courses, but if you just want it as a hobbie then just learn yourself..You'll be surpised how much you can learn on your own....EVERY thing I know about computers I have spell tough...cuz I missed aload of schooling...and I cant do computing at my school I'm at now...Vb is a good language to start with..easier to learn that C++, you thought about doing graphics as well?
