about applying textures in 3ds max 6

In 3ds max 6, I know how to apply bitmaps to my objects, but when I apply it to the object it applies over the whole object. For example, I have a hallway and I want carpet floors and metal walls (just an example). If I apply the carpet to the floor it applies on the walls and ceiling. How would I get the carpet on the floor and the metal on the walls?
Any help is greatly appreciated.

im not exactly sure but if you created boxes or whatever shape you used for your hallways then you select each individual object and not them all linked together
I get what you saying

I understand what your saying, but I made the hallway out of one box, I'm hoping that somehow I can apply a texture by what parts of the box I select. Thx for the reply though.

select the faces you want as carpet, then use the apply to selected button in the material editorm then do the same for walls

make sure u got ignore backfacing checked off otherwise ull get the wall faces your looking thru....and if its one bitmap ur tryin to add then idk...best bet wud be to make the carpect section have a certain Material ID and the walls a different one

What GHL pointed out is correct, I found a nice short tutorial on it while rambling around on the net. Thx for the replies.
