When I am making a map, do I have to convert my textures into .tif files like in the tutorial, or can I leve them as .jpg?

Yeah, you need to use tifs...tool won't recognize jpegs (as far as I know..I'm not at my computer right now...) and won't export them.

Using tif files has several great advantages over jpgs anyway...Jpegs are great for the web and other such uses because of the compression...they would be terrible for making games because of the compression...you end up with artifacts and odd colors sometimes and they can only hold the picture information where tiff's can hold information on alpha channels and the like....Anyway, that was a long winded round about way of saying no...don't even try to use jpegs in a level.

Ok
