can someone help me figure out how to assign materials in 3ds max? when i try to compile my map i always get the error that says
choose a type for the shader <SHADER\MATERIAL NAME>:
1. shader_environment
2. shader_model
3. shader_transparent_generic
4. shader_transparent_chicago
5. shader_transparent_chicago_extended
6. shader_transparent_water
7. shader_transparent_glass
8. shader_transparent_meter
9. shader_transparent_plasma
choice (1-9):
but when i select one its says can't create the shader <none>.shader_enviroment or whatever type i choose.

When assigning the materials in 3ds max, which .tif's am i allowed to use and which am i not allowed to use? when i try the UVW map thing to see teh material i put on there, it never shows up. does the pic i use for teh ground of the level have to fit it exactly?

That does not work. I have the same problem, some .tif's such as example_tutorial_panels.tif work but, sw_ice_cliff.tif does not work and asks me for the shader.

thanx guys, the click an drag worked, although when i tried to compile it its still says

###warning:randomly chose one of the 2 shaders called called 'material #' you should fix this.

how do i go about fixing it?

also when i compiled it, it said "couldn't read map file './toolbeta.map'"

and after i compiled it, it made a scenario_structure_bsp file but no .scenario

Thnx guys, i know i sound like a noob in this stuff (maybe thats because i am) but i appreciatte any information you have

I searched the forums for applying materials to objects (Yes, someone used the search button!) and this is right topic to post this i suppose  . I know how to get the materials into the material editor, but what you talk about, the click and drag doesn't work for me. Are you using Max5, or GMax? If you're using Max6, then I must be doing something wrong.

Thnx

(Yes, I know this is an old topic, but it seems people get mad when you start a new one on a topic already discussed)

(Edit) Nevermind, I figured it out.
