yah chamfer the edges so they arent so sharp. to do this in max simply go to edit mesh>select edges>select all the edges you want to chamfer>and click on the slider and drag to your desired amount. i am pretty sure of this. i havent been using max a whole lot lately. i have been working in maya mostly.
look

I just realized i cant chamfer at all, everything ends up real wierd and undesirable, can you point me to a tutorial that explains how to chamfer with desirable results?
Sweet

The problem with chamfer is, you can't always get desirable results. I wouldn't recommend chamfering because alot of the times it will fup. (fuck up)
Oh, and did you follow a tutorial for that? Because I could of sworn I seen one for that.

maybe you could use planes on top of the blocky parts then move the vertices to get the desired results.

trust me, use the chamfer tool. But if you don't know how to use t you will make your models messed up, plus your models have to be set up correclty first of all. Just make a box editable poly -> Select edges, select 2 edges accross from eachother and then find the chamfer button click on it and a box will pop up put a number in and then find the right one so you know what it will look like and that you will like it
