A Modelling Question

I know this is possible, and I have been messing around with tools but I can't get this to work. I want to take a regular box (6 polygons) and take one side and draw a specefic shape and extrude it out. Ex, I have a cabinet door and I want to make a hexagon on the flat surface then extrude, bevel once, bevel twice, and have the handle (not my actual situation).
Because this is kind of hard to explain I made an image (phails -_-) for assistance.
I have my box 6 faces (3 are shown here) and I want to pull a hegaxon from the top without creating another primitive.

not to my knowlegde u cant do that, but if u delete the top face and put 6 new verticies there in the shape you want u can reacreat the top face and then highlight all the new edges and pull them up making new edges. hope that helps

There are a few ways. One way would be to boolean out the hexagon shape from the box, delete the faces that were created, patch up the hole, and then extrude it.
Or, similar to what TomClancey said, you could delete the top face, delete the bottom face of the hexagon you want to put in, merge the models, and create the faces to connect them into one mesh.

Do the latter. Booleans can be really messy.

Mucho gracias para el auyodans.
Thank you very much for your help guys, it work perfectly
But now I have another question...
Is there a way to do the same thing as above but pull out the same shape as the object I'm pulling it from. e.x, instead of that being a hexagon, can it be a sqaure? I realize I could do it the same way, its just I see it in work all the time, it is pretty tedious to create, delete, merge, create, delete, merge...

ok try wat The hushed casket said, which is delete the bottom face of the cube, and the top face of the hexagon or wle shape your useing, and click attach and attach the cube, then make a new face around the cub attache. Then allign the cube with the edges so its nice and straight (srry is thats hard to understand)

i think wat your trying to say is (for gmax) go to edit mesh select mesh then use cut, cut (you sort of create a polygon in a polygun) extrude wat you just cut and there ya got it
