The new "Softimage|XSI EXP for Half-Life 2", which came out today, supports importing and exporting of OBJ models. I've tested it, and it works fine. This is a professional 3d modeling app, completely free of charge. You can find it on fileplanet.com, or the main site, which is: http://www.softimage.com/home/ ... I hope to see more models now! --jimmsta ;)

Max,
I think it maybe your monitors display settings.
if you don't know how to change it here you go:

Right click on your desk top and goto properties then click settings tab move res to 1280x1024. click apply.

When i started up this program it said something to the effect that you need to set display settings to this res for it to work properly kinda lame, but it looks cool and if they made half life 2 with it, it can't be bad.(thanks Jimmsta for the heads up on the program can't wait to mess with it!!)

I too wanna see what the modders in the halo communities can do with this. since it seems to be a fully functional professional 3D program(with rendering ).

Now that I have just spent some time looking through this programs basic tutorial. I get frustrated that the HEK is not released yet.
I am starting to think that Halo might get swept under the modding rug if modders are able to get better results and find more enjoyment in modding from games like Half Life. Which IMHO would make Microsoft a looser in the gaming industry. which is sad considering that if loosing money to M$ is their main reason, I point to counter strike (which started as a Mod of Half life) as a good reason to release the HEK tomorrow. . /rant

funny thing is, it worked the first time, then the second time it didnt work, and now i cant use it because of the res. settings, my monitor doesnt support the required setting, so i think im stumped..

Copied from http://forum.softimage.com:

At uni, the lecturer gave us tips regarding this problem.

NOTE: THIS HAS NOT BEEN TESTED USING THE HALF LIFE VERSION OF EXP - so proceed at own risk.

These are the instructions for EXP Version 3

To run XSI on a PC with a Maximum Resolution of 1024*768

In XSI:EXP - do the following :

1. Download and unzip the contents of this file ( http://www.davidlearnsgames.com/1024x768_720x486.zip ) into the following folder :

C: \Softimage\ XSI-EXP_3.0\ Data \Preferences\Default \ Layouts

2. Start EXP and ignore the warnings

3. In EXP under LAYOUT menu at the top a large number of layouts will be listed to use

- choose : 'gL1024x7683DBG+RAnyRez'

Again, someone might want to comment on whether this works in the new version. I personally have a 1600x1200 res so I haven't even used it on V3.0 - but people have and it works.

If this option still does not work - try some of the other layout options.

This layout originally came from :
http://www.grahamdclark.com/Studentreso ... nloads.htm

A great site for other XSI utilities

i have activated the .SMD exporter part thing, but that doesnt help...

you have to register to use the exporter... it's free, so no worries there.

I meant to quote this, but still, i did register but that only opened up the .smd part for me, it didnt do anything else.
