need help creating a bumpmap

need help creating a bumpmap
ok i have an image i want to be made into a bump map as well, its an ornament and i want it to look etched into something. How would i like turn that into a bump map? go into photo shop and turn it into a black and white image? would that work? plz post something i rlly need it. ty for your time.
