[model][WIP] pistol (making a new one)

Finish a new model/mesh? Got something you're working on? Finish a new map? Here's the place to post it for feedback and whatnot.

[model][WIP] pistol (making a new one)

Post by flyinrooster »

well, i always hate sayin things like this is my frist model or w/e, but it is. this is a WIP. i have yet to add the trigger guard, trigger, or magazine, AND i need to just edit the model some :p. i think it looks a little(not much, though) like a p99, but im trying to make one that's new. i will think of a name later though. i will also skin this later. pics!

feel free to comment as you wish. i will try to implement most of your ideas into the design. also just tell me how well i did for my first model, and what i should continue doing in my others, and what i shouldn't continue to do.

To be honest? Ewwww. It only vaguely resembles a pistol, and one thats been half melted at that. Plus, you're wasting hundreds of polygons putting them where theyre totally unecessary.

Beyond repair, sorry, but it had to be said before people who know shit all about modeling burst in proclaiming it to be awesome.

it's a terrible model. look up katarn's tutorial, "gun modeling for dummies" stickied in this forum. it'll really help.

Ah, Snaf beat them here, good.

Yeah. Look that up, it will definitely help. That's what started me modeling guns, and most of them come out alright-ish.

Nice to see someone who doesn't start screaming abuse when told they aren't the best modeler the world's ever seen for once. No problem, hope it comes out well.

yes, it's really nice to see that. anyways, flyinrooster, you can find lots of tutorials for max on www.pixel2life.com, www.sourceblog.net (have to sign up), and the links that are in katarn's tutorial are very helpful.

now, whenever you get harsh criticism about something from experienced modelers, understand that it's to help you. there will be some kids here that will say that we are being jerks, etc etc, but remember, these are the people that probably don't know anything about modeling. these are the same people who will give you praise for making anything that slightly resembles a gun, and if it doesn't, they say that it's good for being custom or something along those lines.

so, good luck, i hope you learn quickly.

thanks and i understand completely what you guys are saying. im usually very open to criticism, and im glad that not one of those people came in here. id rather get advice and criticism from "the masters" than praise from the noobs. thanks for going out of your way to give me some links snafubar. :D i will get to work on this and hopefully finish it.

lol, that's not a bad thing. it would be good to know what you're doing, have a halfway decent model, and then post it.

You have 3ds max, you should render a picture before you post, it makes it look better than it actually is. :D I like that your adding detail also, like the gun barrel. Also, you don't have to bore the barrel, do it in the skin. I just wastes Polys.

True.
Doctor wrote::D I like that your adding detail also, like the gun barrel.
Yes, I am glad that someone actually took time practicing the minor details. Many, many people, right here on these forums, put out crude, bizarre, spiky models, but you have an eye for the little things(if not the big picture) and I'm sure we all look forward to the outcome of this model.
Doctor wrote:Also, you don't have to bore the barrel, do it in the skin. I just wastes Polys.
Missing a "t" in the first word of the last sentence and "P" doesn't need capitalization... sorry, I get compulsive. Anyway, a shallow bore won't hurt, it gives the weapon dimension and amplifies the work of the skin, makes it much more eye pleasing... especially for the person staring down the barrell!

thx for your comments, but i am not going to continue this specific gun. this does not mean i wont make more pistols, and maybe even try to remake this one, but i would rather start over.

Try spline or preferably plane, it allows for easier adding of detail.

Definitely try spline or box modeling with a reference. It makes it not only much easier to get proportions and such correct, but it looks much much better.

honestly, box and spline are trash in comparison to plane modeling. drop those like a bad habit and get with the real deal; plane modeling.
