well u cant make a skin in 3d max, u can map the layout of the skin in 3d max, but its different for halo so even if u unrapped the uvw and used it and made your own skin when u put it back into halo its going to be all screwed up because they didnt use standard uvw maps they used custom ones. If u dont plan to put it back in u need to make your model, then go to your modifier tab and go down to unwrap uvw, u there can change how it is laid out but if you are not fimiliar with it it can get difficult to do, look for some tutorials on the internet on how to unrap uvws and use them to skin for 3d max, its not somthing I can explain because it is different for every individual object and scene and different things will happen. you just have to look up some different tuts and learn to deal what comes up with them. You will still have to make your skin in photoshop though, u can use vertex paint in max but its more for shading and adding layers of opaque colors and blending and doesnt work well for great skinning. But if u want to put it back into halo ull just have to settle for the skin already made for halo and just alter that as needed to work well with your model.
