				QUESTIONS ABOUT MAPPING

I am an experienced Halo 1 player, but I am practically clueless when it comes to mapping/modding. I was wondering if anyone could post or send me a list of the programs I need and what steps I should take ***IN ENGLISH, NOT TECHY LANGUAGE lol*** to create a cool map. What I am really confused about is 3DS Max. What exactly is it? Where can I get it? Is it free? PLEASE HELP ME!!!!
PS - I would strongly prefer a list of free programs, not $450 programs.

				For mapping you will need:
3ds max: quite expensive & 30 day trial.
HEK: Free
Any photo program that can export .dds.
3Ds Max is modeling program. It is not free however there is a 30 day trial. Head over to
www.discreet.com
Now i do understand there is a student liscence which is much cheeper but you must have a signiture from your principal/headmaster saying you are a student. Talk to Pie about that (get his AIM or something. He should however read over this topic considering how he is always looking). I think he has a student liscence.

				Thanks guys!
But is there a program more like Tony Hawk that is more straight forward and simplistic? What about guerilla? Where do I get that?

If you want some tutorials on beginning map making there are a few around. I can link you if you want.
Also, yes, I do have a student license. $172 or somethign around there for a one year license. If you think about it it is a nice deal.
Buy 3ds max = $3000
10 Years later = Total of $3000
Student License = $172
10 Years later = total of $1720
I personally think its an awsome way to get the program. But hte catch is, you need to be a student in a school.

You can also use GMax, which is a cut down version of 3DS Max, but it's free.
