jms exporting

i am currently learning how to make a map with the video tutorials here, but after going and making the model of the map, i can not export it to a jms in either 3dsmax or gmax. when i do try to eport as a jms in gmax, it exports it as ____.jms.gmax, and in 3dsmax, it just says it does not know how to export. is there an application that can export as jms?
note: i have gmax 1.2 and 3dsmax 6
