I use smoothing groups cause my weapons are always made from editable poly.

EDIT: heres the new pic, it isnt much of a difference but i dont want to over do it.

it still looks a little lumpy. like around the barrel etc. I dunno. guns seem a little more chunky to me.

good job though

The front grip is smooth. It's suposed to be bumpy, like a series of identical cylinders. If you don't know what I'm talking about, it's the front third of the gun that's apparently gradiated f(starting at a blackish hue) that ends where the barrel starts. This is where a right-handed person would put his left hand when aiming such a rifle.

That little retangular part will maybe have some materail editing problems...

Hmm.. You may have added too many smoothing groups. Only seperate pieces need to be smoothed, and make sure each piece has a different group unless they are attached to each other (that way the smooth will be.. err.. seamless, you won't see that big line where they meat)

More practice with smoothing and it will look great :D

venamai is exactly right, go in polygon mode and highlight the faces of the parts you want to smooth and then give the different parts of the gun certain smoothing group
