(to Katarn) Wow man, you have skill!
I can only model guns based of other models (I can't make them from scratch), but then again all I have is Milkshape... I made a really primitive Brute shot once though, for Vice City...

4. Right-click on the left viewport name and click "smooth with highlights". The reference picture should appear in the left viewport.
I dont know where to right click?!?

Thats how far I am and I cant figure out where to right click!

Can someone help please. Help a noob out... :?
Yeah, I'm having a similar problem...Whenever I apply the bitmap to the material editor, the little white and blue colored cube doesn't apper.

Nice models.
http://tutorials.moddb.com/16/ <<<<-the only plane modeling tutorial i can find
I've recently started downloading these (big downloads, but they are worth it) and they have been extremely helpful. He even makes a few mistakes (accidentally) that seem common, and explains how to fix them easily. :D

Where do you find high quality side views of your weapons for references? I've been using Google and http://world.guns.ru/main-e.htm but for some weapons I've had a lot of trouble finding big pictures that aren't on a strange angle. Any other suggestions?

Also, I've got a nice M4A1 pic I want to put in to 3DS max as a reference for modeling. I've tried a couple different reference setup methods (including the one you've mentioned) to try and get this working, but every time it keeps resizing it. I'm nearly positive my size is correct (unless its showing me a different size?), and I've tried testing other references in the same scene and they all work perfectly. As you can see from the screenshot below, the bigger image is the one I'm having trouble with.

I think the problem is because of the size, its large so it gets zoomed out to fit the window while viewing. But the image in the viewports is horrible quality, even compared to that of the zoomed out image when viewing. When viewing in max it zooms to 1:2 size ratio instead of 1:1. See below; this is just after pressing the "view" button in Material Editor (I've zoomed to 1:1 using the mousewheel, but it originally starts at 1:2)
http://img221.echo.cx/img221/50/3dsmaxhelp26cl.jpg

And here is my material editor.

Hopefully you know how to fix this, so far its the only time I've had problems with setting up references. It would be a great reference - if it would ever work!

Thanks for the links and nice tips/tutorials, Kartan!

Could you also add a detailed tut for gmax texturing (of a model)?

i can tell you how to model low quality weapons in z modeler. simple. make objects, shift them, rotate them and all that until it looks a bit like a weapon. high quality, use create-surface-flat and make surfaces for every bit of detail and use the tube object for the barrel.

Ok whenever I download the plane modeling tutorial and try to open it with winrar, it says the file is either unkown or damaged. It is a .rar obviously so it isnt an unknown file, ive even saved it as a different name and tried.
I uninstalled, deleted, redownloaded and re-installed winRar and still, it won't open.
